A colleague bought the office some sweets for tea from the recently opened C'est la B at Pacific Place.From all of the hype surrounding this new pastry shop, I was anxious to try their cakes. I am trained in Patisserie at Le Cordon Bleu and have had the privilege of tasting some of the best pastries in the world. As a passionate sweet tooth, I am always looking for a new, delicious treat.
Unfortunately, the hype surrounding C'est la B was just that: hype. The cakes were disappointing from beginning to end. To begin, the cakes were individually wrapped in plastic strips, much like the cakes at Maxim's. However, the cakes at Maxim's cost $15HKD, whereas these cakes cost $60HKD. For a cake that costs four times as much as Maxim's, I expected more refined packaging and presentation. These cakes looked like they were from a grocery store.
However, packaging was not the only faux pas. C'est la B offers cakes with a number of interesting names, such as "Banana Lust", "Madame Butterfly", "Sunshine" and most memorable, "Better than Sex". Unfortunately, the names were the only interesting parts of these cakes. Every piece was flavourless and used the same type of sponge cake as a base. If I didn't know that the name of the pastry was "Banana Lust", I would not have been able to identify the flavour. Also, the need for the plastic strip was revealed upon tasting: each piece of cake was so poorly assembled that the strip was required to keep the cakes in once piece.
Overall, the only attractive and interesting part of the C'est la B's cakes are their names. At these prices though, a fancy name is not enough and these cakes are not worth another taste. I'll go to Maxim's.
