We first came to this restaurant a few years ago. It was innovative without being pretenious, and tasted good. This evening we went there after not having been for about six months. The menu was entirely new. The pictures that are supposed to illustrate the dish were randomly placed and for many of the dishes one has to read the small print but long winded narrative to identify the photo. The nice Korean drinks are now gone from the drinks list. There are now mocktails and cocktails and a wine list
This evening we went there after not having been for about six months.
The menu was entirely new. The pictures that are supposed to illustrate the dish were randomly placed and for many of the dishes one has to read the small print but long winded narrative to identify the photo.
The nice Korean drinks are now gone from the drinks list. There are now mocktails and cocktails and a wine list. We stayed with water.
The previous favorites are now gone. I remember fondly the beef cakes and other nice dishes. Too many to mention here. In their stead are new ones we don't recognize. Hey, but that is good. An innovative restaurant should innovate and introduce new and tasty (may be even clever dishes). So we asked for and went with their recommendations.
Here are some select dishes we ordered :
Deep fried chicken wings - Quite dull and didn't taste much. So bland that one of our guests asked had I tried Kentucky Fried chicken! The chicken meat was bland too, probably from long freezing.
Eggplants with squid ink - Well, uninteresting and a bit chewy
Sweet peppers stuffed with raw tuna - Very good
Endives stuffed with pork neck meat (2) and with shimps (2) - Uninteresting
Beef on the bone with roasted vegetables - Wow, this dish turned out to be half the former size and they charge $390. Literally 6 thin slices of beef measuring one inch by 1.5 inch and. Yes, they threw in some grilled vegetables. But there is simply no getting away from the fact that on weight basis this is equal in price to the best American prime sirloin steak at the Intercontinental Steak House, the most expensive beef in town! Really?
Smoked pork belly - This is the other main dish. It came in an urn. The waiter opened it and smoke came out. He closed it again and took the thing away. After a while he brought back a dish with some slices of fatty pork belly on it, but unfortunately no taste of the smoke. Some accompaniment, such as sesame leaves, seaweed, sliced peppers. Again, the portion is pitifully small and the cost was $315! We can get a portion of pork belly with plentiful lettuce leaves and full accompaniments at Sorabol which is twice the size.
Fried rice with Kimchi - Unremarkable
Stir fried sweet potato noodles with soy sauce - unremarkable. In fact a bit sloppy.
The cooking has gone downhill so drastically we asked if there is a new chef. They said they have the same chef but they introduce a new menu every season. Yes, sure.
The bill for the dinner for four came to $2,100. A course for four persons at Sorabol, with considerably more food, is $1,100.
Deleted off the list of places to go.
