Most of the items that I tried (at various locations) have been great and true to Japanese styled pastries, and the price is relatively reasonable when compared to competitors Little Mermaid.
Some of my favorites are:
乡村软法包–As long as you focus on the word “Soft”(软) and NOT “French Bread” (法包), this bread is indeed soft and fluffy and goes well with just simple butter or jam.
丹麦芝士脆包–A crispy crackling (when fresh from oven) combined with a slightly savory cream cheese filling. Just enough for an afternoon treat
纯味软包 – Basically a soft roll without crust. Very fluffy and soft and great with condensed milk!
超熟方包– Probably the softest white bread in the market. When you tear it up it sheds like cotton!
抺茶红豆包– The red bean paste and cream inside provide just enough sweetness and balance well with the matcha flavored bun.
蕃薯包– My mom’s favorite with a mildly sweet sweet potato filling encased in crusty glazed bread
芝士波波–a cheesy treat with a chewy texture which makes you go for one after one after one
The milky flavor of the 北海道包 and the crusty topping of the 日式蜜瓜包 are also very pleasant and not cloying at all.
Other Honorees:
日式炸猪扒包– normally I am not a fan of this kind of bread because the meat tends to be dry likek plastic and the breading is overly-thick . But the ones at Panash are quite good, with the tonkatsu sauce giving some moisture and flavor to the pork cutlets and the bread
蓝莓芝士挞- Appetizing sweet cream cheese filled with some (sometimes very little) blueberry puree. The tart shell is actually bread-based and a little too dry.
红豆包- While the bread is soft and you can feel the red bean bits, the flavor of red beans was indiscernible.
Ready-to-go Sandwiches – Since they have good white bread, their pre-made sandwiches are delicious and very fresh. Without a doubt better than those at convenience stores and supermarkets.
Other less impressive offerings:
芝士souffle蛋糕 – with the name soufflé I expected some sort of airy texture but it was just a crumbly cheese muffin. Not impressed.
日式薄饼包– An failed attempt to make a bread version of oknomiyaki. The lettuce and katsuobushi (bonito flakes) fillings become mushy and the bread turns really soggy with the excessive okonomiyaki sauce. Not good.
Despite a few missteps, Panash continues to churn out great Japanese styled pastries without compromising to the local market. Panash is definitely one of my favorite Japanese bakeries in Hong Kong!
