Mom's big 60 is coming soon. Should the cake be mainstream or custom-made? Since I still have two months until D-Day, I'll try different stores. I'll have to make sure I keep up with sport activities cuz there'll be lots of cake. As I go on this quest, I'll write reviews that I'll name "Cake Tasting Serie - ". First stop: Zoe. Before setting out, I've skimmed through Zoe's Facebook page. I was hoping to get my hands on a catalogue, but due to menu updates, that wasn't available. At least cakes were on display. One thing worth noting was that the staff did an excellent job at detailing each item. She even suggested to bring home mini cakes as I couldn't make up my mind. That's where the idea of cake tasting burgeoned. I must say, her non-pushy, friendly and helpful service was impeccable.
Now for the tasting part, from upper left to lower right: --- Joocy Yuzu ---
Look: simple, but elegant
Taste: slightly too sour; real flower was bitter
Texture: soft and moist top; hard biscuit bottom
--- Blood Orange ---
Look: cute and colourful, but too much pattern for a whole cake
Taste: sweet with light orange aroma
Texture: soft and moist top; hard biscuit bottom
--- Tiramisu ---
Look: too much going on at the top, not very attractive
Taste: strong liquor in cake; chocolate biscuit
Texture: creamy cheese; spongy cake; thick-hard bottom
--- Lychee Rose ---
Look: balanced colours of pink on white with specks of gold
Taste: slightly sour
Texture: soft and moist top; hard biscuit bottom These four had in common, the layers and the hard-to-cut bottom. For the looks, I prefer Joocy Yuzu and Lychee Rose. As for the taste, I'll go first with Tiramisu and then Blood Orange. If there's a next time, I wouldn't mind trying the chestnut-flavoured Zoe cake. My cake journey is only beginning, so stay tuned.
