Following my previous good experience here, as shown by my good review, I had anticipated another good dinner yesterday night. Unfortunately, I found the quality of the food to have fallen. The 担担面 tasted bland and lacked peanut taste altogether. The 小笼包 were visibly overcooked as they were shrunken and wrinkled and all the juice had leaked out and solidified into brown clumps around the dumplings. The meat inside them were – unsurprisingly – hard and rough. New dishes that we hadn’t tried
New dishes that we hadn’t tried last time similarly did not impress:
酒糟黄鱼片
Though the sauce tasted ok, the fish was so soft and mushy they tasted like pieces of tofu.
酸辣汤
The levels of spice and sourness just didn’t quite make the mark – even the one I had in a small Chinese restaurant in Australia was more authentic.
炸银丝卷
As with the 炸馒头 last time, this deep-fried item was not crispy at all but had a tough outer layer instead.
生煎包
Though the pork filling was more tender than that inside the小笼包, there was no juice/soup whatsoever. The underside of the buns that are meant to be crispy were just tough and hard to chew. Each bun was also tiny in size.
Having had such high hopes for this place, the inconsistency of its quality is definitely disappointing. It didn't even have that many customers that night, so the poor food can't be excused by saying the kitchen was swamped. Whatever the reason, it is doubtful that I would return again.
