Ever since i graduated, I only got to catch up with my school mates once in a blue moon or any other special events. Since some of us were free to catch up on a weekday evening, we decided to meet up for drink and dinner. One of us suggested Frites as the ambience was suitable for chit chatting and serve reasonable food and beer. We decided to come over to their Quarry Bay outlet even though there have other outlets more conveniently located at Wanchai, Central and Causeway Bay. It was around 1
We decided to come over to their Quarry Bay outlet even though there have other outlets more conveniently located at Wanchai, Central and Causeway Bay. It was around 10 minutes walk from Quarry Bay MTR and located inside Oxford House.
They retain the ancient touch of 1920's decor, including their furniture and lightings. Their menu was very comprehensive, serving starters, sides, mussel pots, mains, snacks and desserts etc.
They were currently running some special promotion for their happy hour. There is a 50% off for their beer, bubbles, wines, spirits and cocktails and is valid from Monday to Friday between 3pm to 8 pm. No wonder whenever i walked past their Wanchai branch after work, I saw groups of office workers drinking away after work. Stella draught was light and smooth, with a slight bit of bitterness. Danzante prosecco is a sparkling champagne, smooth and fruity taste. It left a sweet taste on my palate. We ordered a coconut beer as it was quite interesting and it was served in a round bowl, which was quite unique. The taste of coconut was quite strong and refreshing, suitable in this type of warm evening. Satan beer was not commonly found in HK bars, and was recommended by the waitress. It has a fruity taste, with a touch of bitterness and spicy.
Crab tian - Mashed crab meat was mixed with bean, tomato and avocado etc and was served with garlic bread. The garlic bread was very soft and crispy, and the salad was tasty and sour due to the lemon dressing. It really helped to open up my appetite as a starter.
Laksa mussel pot - Since mussel was their signature dish, we definitely will go for it. We feel that laksa flavour was quite an unique flavour in a Western restaurant and we loved the spiciness of it. It was served with garlic bread and french fries as well. It was available in 1/2kg or 1kg portion. The mussel absorbed the essence of the coconut milk, clemongrass and lime. It was juicy and chewy, with a touch of spiciness. The fries was fried till hot and crispy, and the texture was fat as well.
Steak and frites - The serving was very huge, with all 14oz of black angus ribeye in it. It comes with fries and salad as well. It was quite unique, as truffle butter was placed on top of the beef for us to spread it all over. We requested for 60% , and it still retained some redness in the meat. The butter helped to make the beef buttery and enhance the flavour because of the truffle. The meat was grilled till soft and tender, with some charred taste at the edge.
Hot chocolate fondant - The fondant was considered bigger than usual and when we cut it open, the lava chocolate started to flow out instantly. The cake was baked till crispy outside, yet the sponge was still soft and the chocolate was thick and rich. It will be better if the scoop of the ice cream was bigger.
