Exploring the Sai Ying Pun area, I discovered  small little shop called Time to Gold. It sold traditional Chinese Hakka pastries as well as healthy Chinese herbal drinks. It looked more modern than most places that sold this. They also had a sign. Four mochi or tea cakes for $60. They also sold other traditional snacks but all packaged in a more modern way. There was also a box of DIY tea cakes.

They sold the tea cakes as well. But what caught my eye was the tea cakes were not only nontraditional flavours but they were shaped like animals.

Menu is in English and Chinese. Everything is labelled in English and Chinese. There is no 10% service charge as it's a take away shop only.

I got two cute tea cakes: The frog is matcha with red bean and the panda is sweet fried peanuts. They were cold so you had to reheat them later by steaming them. Instructions weren't provided so we just guessed about 10 minutes? The matcha from the frog didn't really shine through but the red bean was a nice sweet pasty filling. The panda was interesting with the sweet fried peanuts inside.

As it was $60 for four, I also chose two mochi: taro (on the left) and rich chocolate with Oreo (on the right).

The mochi were fantastic! One of the best I've had in Hong Kong in a long while. The chocolate one was very rich in chocolate but the best part was the crumbs of Oreo. There was also a bit of saltiness so it brought out the sweetness even more. And the mochi ... was so soft.

The taro one was coated with dessicated coconut. The mochi here was also super soft and delicate. The taro paste was sweet and smooth.

The mochi were fantastic and I liked they modernized something that is traditional without being ridiculous. I also found that this is a social enterprise business run by women to help women learn new work skills and other ways to help them. Would be back if in the area.
