Gastrobox is a fairly pretty looking restaurant. A restaurant that seems to appeal to a lot of OLs when I came here for lunch one day. I told boyfriend about it and he decided he wanted to take a look. Or maybe he was wondering if he'd be the only guy in a restaurant full of girls?Since we decided to have dinner before heading to a movie, we got here early so it was fairly empty upon arrival. Since we decided to have dinner before heading to a movie, we got here early so it was fairly empty upon arrival. But it filled up quickly when we were finished with our meal. It's a nice looking restaurant even though it's very narrow. Thus, seating felt a bit cramped and all on one side.
After a bit of pondering, we decided on the two people dinner set that came with an appetizer, soup, main, dessert and coffee or tea for $688 for two people.
Deep Fried Scampi with Cider Batter ($88). As boyfriend was looking at the a la carte menu, his eyes lit up at the sight of fried stuff. Considering we ordered a two people set dinner and I would be stuck eating all the salad, he got to choose a fried item off the a la carte menu. The batter was not too thick but crispy enough. The shrimp tasted pretty fresh. There was a side of thick cut fries that were pretty good.
Oyster in Soup with Tomato Salsa. This was included with our dinner set and was the appetizer. This was two oysters laid on top of a bed of salad. The salad was nice with a balasmic vinegar dressing. The oysters were ok but flavor was covered up by the tomato salsa.
Black Truffle with Wild Mushroom Cream Soup. Those that know me know that I'm not a big fan of truffle oil and truffle paste. But this is something that is very typical of majority of restaurants in Hong Kong today. They must add truffle oil to a perfectly fine mushroom soup to cover all exisitence of the actual mushroom flavor. I've since resigned to the fact that this will be the case for every restaurant I go to when they offer mushroom soup on the menu. It's probably why I tend not to choose this soup if given a choice. As there was no choice, I was resigned to eating this. It was fine soup. Nice and creamy. Tasting it prior to mixing the truffle oil, it had a woody mushroom taste. However, after mixing it with the truffle oil, I couldn't taste anything but truffle so the entire wild mushroom used as the base of the soup went to waste.
They offered us a bread basket consisting of toasted foccacia. The bread, like last time, is still my favorite. It smelled fantastic.
Grilled New Zealand Rib Eye. There were two mains on offer so we chose both of them to share. This was the rib eye. It came with mashed potatoes and steamed vegetables. The potatoes were creamy but could use with a douse more butter.
We asked for a medium rare and got a medium rare. The steak tasted pretty good and was not dried out. Cooked very well. There was a peppercorn gravy with it. I think boyfriend used it all up.
Boston Lobster with Tomato Pasta. There actually is no lobster meat in the shell that they placed on top of the pasta. It was clearly for decoration purposes. The linguine was perfectly al dente and there was plenty of lobster meat scattered through out. But what I did like was the sauce as it was a rich herby tomato sauce.
Daily Dessert. This was a blueberry cheesecake. It was huge. Especially after a filling dinner, this was super huge. It was a nice cheesecake but just super huge. I did like the decoration on the plate. They used chocolate and fruit sauce to make a pretty flower on mine.

Pretty environment. For a two people dinner set, it wasn't too expensive and rather value for money. I could recommend it to my male friends who want to take a girl out to impress without breaking the bank.
