I am generally very sceptical about all these holes in the walls with Michelin stars - there is no way the Michelin inspectors can go to every little restaurant in HK and find the best ones - plus you see these little places get famous and then automatically raise their prices and start loads of new branches everywhere.Nevertheless, I was really pleasantly surprised by the food at 阿鸿小吃, which has randomly opened a branch at the airport T2 where no one goes! I am generally very sceptical about all these holes in the walls with Michelin stars - there is no way the Michelin inspectors can go to every little restaurant in HK and find the best ones - plus you see these little places get famous and then automatically raise their prices and start loads of new branches everywhere.

Nevertheless, I was really pleasantly surprised by the food at 阿鸿小吃, which has randomly opened a branch at the airport T2 where no one goes! I had warned my friend there will be a queue at the original branch in North Point when we got there, so we arrived early on a Saturday lunchtime, arriving just as they opened. A big surprise is that even though we were only 2 people at a 4 person table, they did not make us share tables!

There is not a lot on the menu, yet with only 2 people, we struggled to decide what to have. They had run out of their pig's ear, so in the end we tasted:

Their very famous vegetables with fermented tofu 南乳粗斋 was good and refreshing, felt very much like home cooking. This will not win any prizes necessarily, but just good competent food.
Hmmm....

Their special lao mein 招牌捞面 comes with a big blurb about its heritage, and whilst it was very fragrant 香, must say it was a little oily, especially after it has cooled down a bit.

My very adventurous gweilo friend also wanted to try the duck's tongues - not really my cup of tea, but very nice flavours.

But given that the place is famous for its 卤水, it is not surprising that it was by far the best dish! Their goose 卤水鹅片 was juicy, tender, so good. I should have got some to takeaway!

This was my first visit so I don't know what the place was like before it became so celebrated - its prices were surprisingly not that cheap, came to around $200 per person (!), quite expensive for a hole in the wall. But I will definitely go back just for the goose!!
