Wandering around Gough Street, we came across a quiet noodle shop called 拾味正宗刀削面馆 (no English name). I recognized it! It was the place in Causeway Bay that I've always been curious about as it serves knife cut noodles. There aren't that many places in Hong Kong that serve this so I always wanted to try. But as Causeway Bay always has too many newer things opening, I often forget about it. Thus, when we walked by this in Gough Street and we weren't sure what to have for dinner, boyfriend suggeste
Inside was a regular noodle shop. They have outdoor seating which is a bit different than the other branch. At the front is where they showcase them cooking the noodles. When we went in, a couple of the staff were busily making dumplings. So, this is obviously made in house and not outsourced from some where like some places.
Menu is in English and Chinese. There is no 10% service charge. You order by scanning a QR code available at the tble. It was pretty easy to use and food does come out fast. The menu offers various noodle and rice sets along with a la carte. Noodle and rice sets do not come with a drink but can be added for a minimal charge. Vegetarian options are available where you can also change the soup base to a vegetarian one for also a minimal charge. The default noodle is knife cut noodles but you can change to something else for free.
We added $6 for soy milk. It was pretty good. A rich bean taste that wasn't too sweet. A decent portion size as well.
We shared a plate of Soy Sauce Chicken Wings ($38). Super rich in color and wow .. the soy sauce was soaked well. VERY WELL. The meat literally fell off the bone. You don't even need to chew. It was marinaded for that long.
I had the noodles with Chicken in Wine ($58) with an extra topping of Shanghai Wonton ($10). The wontons were served in the bowl of noodles while the chicken was served on a separate plate. Portion was huge! There was a lot of noodles.
The wontons were quite big. As they were Shanghai style, the skin is thicker but at least it didn't feel doughy. The filling was abundant with pork and chives. Very juicy and quite good. Like xiao long bao without the added soup inside.
The knife cut noodles were not too thick and smooth as silk. The strands were chewy and slippery. Each strand were not identical which meant they really did make these in house.
The soup was amazing. A rich clear pork and chicken broth. I finished it completely. I rarely do.
The drunken chicken was excellent. The wine wasn't over powering. It was a nice balance with the herbs and seasonings used to make the sauce. The chicken was well marinaded in it. And portion size. WOW! Didn't expect them to give you so much.
Boyfriend had noodles with Spicy Beef Shank ($55) and added an extra topping of Spicy Honey Comb Stomach for $10. The toppings were also served on a separate plate. There was a generous scoop of hot chili oil on top. The beef shank was firm. The honey comb was well braised. And the spicy chili oil? Super spicy but so fragrant. If you love spicy food, this is definitely for you. He threw the whole mountain of chili oil into his bowl of noodles.
Portion size was big. Bigger than we expected especially being located in Central where portions are always expected to be small. The food tasted very good and service was fast. Place was surprisingly tidy as well with a bottle of hand sanitizer on each table for diners to use. Defintely be back.
