The interior of Zushi ANA at the Times Square is a classy fusion of modern and traditional; on first appearance, the restaurant looks plush and well-managed. This shouldn't be a surprise, as the highly successful and rapidly expanding conglomerate Lubuds (whose business interests are so diversified that it runs hair salons such as Toni&Guy in Hong Kong) is behind Zushi ANA.We came here for a quick lunch. We came here for a quick lunch. The whole place was bustling even at around 1.45pm on a weekday. For lunch, you get to choose among a wide range of different cooking styles and Japanese classics, from tempura, sashimi and sushi to sashimi rice bowls and other meaty selections (grilled chicken, deep-fried pork, grilled cod, etc.). All of these choices are accompanied by rice, steamed egg custard, miso soup, salad, and a small appetizer. The price ranges from $138 to triple that amount. If you were to come between 3pm and 5pm on a weekday, you could get a 30% discount off the lunch menu.

We chose the premium sashimi lunch set ($278) and the vegetable tempura lunch set ($148).

The salad was very tasty with a citrusy and berrylike sauce and some red kidney beans. The appetizer was a small plate of cold, boiled lettuce and mushrooms. Both of these made great starts to a pleasant meal.

The texture of the chawanmushi (steamed egg custard) was divinely silky and soft. Simple but impeccable.

The sashimi platter came shortly after we ordered. Apart from the sea urchin which was mid-grade, everything was extremely fresh. The cuts were also generous and would definitely fill you up even if you had an insatiable appetite.

The rice was also very nicely cooked--nutty, sweet, chewy, and sticky--something that we've stopped taking for granted lately even at decent Japanese restaurants.

Then came the vegetable tempura set. This was a memorable dish rich in texture and flavors. The batter was crunchy and light. I especially liked the cauliflower piece which had some extra crispy veggie bits added to it.

Overall this was simply very satisfying--scrumptious without the guilt of heavy deep-fried food. You also get to have some fun by dipping your veggies in three different kinds of salt. The one to the far right is spicy and addictive!

A few of the younger female servers were not all that friendly, but when we moved to the table counters for extra privacy, we were served by a few male servers who were all extremely polite, professional and helpful. The chefs who worked at the counter were also very attentive and kind.
