For those of you who have ever had an office crush, you’d know that it’s the sweetest feeling. You find yourself thinking of her all the time. And you’re going to the pantry countless times a day just so that you can “accidentally” bump into her. To be honest, I have overdosed on coffee way too often because of her! Of course, when you do meet her, you are absolutely too petrified to even say even a single word. Well, this was absolutely the case with me until I finally mustered up the courage
You find yourself thinking of her all the time. And you’re going to the pantry countless times a day just so that you can “accidentally” bump into her. To be honest, I have overdosed on coffee way too often because of her!
Of course, when you do meet her, you are absolutely too petrified to even say even a single word. Well, this was absolutely the case with me until I finally mustered up the courage to just say “hi”.
Many months and many baby steps later, my courage to approach my office crush finally resulted in a dinner date! YES!!!
So for the occasion, we decided to go to Mak Mak, which is located in a “famously obscure” corner in Central. Although a bit too crowded even on a weekday evening to be considered a romantic getaway, the layout and lighting of the restaurant definitely set the right mood.
While we didn’t order any alcohol, we did start off with a couple of drinks to help us relax: young coconut for her and lime soda for me. To be honest, I expected a bit more in terms of the presentation and originality of these drinks given the venue. But in the end, what we were offered wasn’t too much different that what you could get in a typical street stall.
However, things began to improve with the arrival of our first dish, pomelo salad. Nicely decorated and with nice juicy chunks of pomelo, this appetizer didn’t fail to impress. What’s more, the garnish, which consisted of parsley, sweet onion, and other spices, not only made the dish look incredibly appetizing, but it really added texture and flavour to the offering. Well done!
Next, we ordered the Pad Thai. With this dish being a staple of every single Thai restaurant out there, it’s not easy to stand out! Fortunately, the interpretation from Mak Mak is deserving of a ‘thumbs-up’. The dish was nicely garnished and presented in a way that shouted ‘authenticity’. Furthermore, the freshness of the ingredients, from the juicy shrimp to the crisp veggies, really stood out and was not obscured by an excessive amount to spices or oil, as is often the case.
The highlight of the evening was definitely dessert! We decided to share the coconut ice-cream which almost sounds so simplistic to the point of being anti-climatic. But to my surprise, this dish was simply amazing! Presented in a coconut shell and garnished a mixture of nuts, grass jelly, and shaved coconut, this dish had the perfect combination of great taste and artistry that makes it worthy of being called a masterpiece. I could think of no better way to cap off a perfect evening.
Listen guys, if you ever had an office crush, don’t be shy. Build up your courage and just talk to her! This could turn out to a great friendship or maybe even something more. While your ultimate destiny is a mystery, what I can tell you is that you can do no wrong by taking her to Mak Mak on your first date.
