Rummin tings is one of the most hyped new openings lately - so I've decided to give it a try finally and was expecting quite high. We sat in the bar, music was very loud, services wasn't exactly attentive. We asked the bar tender what was good and he pointed at the menu and named the signatures pretty much one by one without much explanation. We sat in the bar, music was very loud, services wasn't exactly attentive. We asked the bar tender what was good and he pointed at the menu and named the signatures pretty much one by one without much explanation. So we had the Buttah and another one (I forgot its name) with rum, cinnamon, lime and pineappppe. Both looked interesting with their use of ingredients and you'd imagine its gonna be either take or break. They tasted quite sweet and one-note, ie, managed to be quite surprisingly average.
We also had the saltfish, veggie platter and steamed clams. Food prices was very affordable compared to the drink prices. Saltfish accra was deep fried with Jamaican powder and it tasted ok. Not particularly impressive. I liked the veggie patties which was quite fresh. The chili sauce give both dishes another kick and made them very enjoyable. The clams later arrived after we had to remind the staff. It was very fresh and flavourful with a mix of flavours including curry, fresh bay leaves and a hint of sweetness of the rum. A bit too salty for us tho after a few bites.
We think the food was surely stronger than the drinks in Rummin Tings but as a Caribbean bar we were expecting a lot more. The buzzing place will be (or is already) a success with its location, funky concept, the socialite owners and clientele and media attention. But with these winning ingredients, we found the basics, especially the drinks and services, were a bit weak. Will perhaps give it another chance once things are more ironed out
