B wanted sashimi but I wanted cooked, so during the heated debate over what's for dinner, this restaurant came to mind. We were brought here by a friend some time ago, this group owns three restaurants in the same building respectively serving sushi/sashimi, yakitori and tempura. If I recalled correctly the experience was indeed great as far as both food and service are concerned. Nevertheless, our experience this time overturned everything we were impressed about them.Food was ok but dinner was
Food was ok but dinner was unpleasant.
Sushis - fresh and of good quality.
Tempuras - just so so with batter a bit too thick and oil not properly drained.
Fried Tofu - quite unpleasingly unconventional fusing Japanese with Chinese (preserved eggs) with French (loaded with galic and other unknown stuff on the top). I was expecting the ordinary deep fried tofu in a chewy Japanese style batter with soya sauce and katsuobushi!
I reckon we made 2 mistakes: a) thought being able to order different types of Jap cuisines in one place was a good idea; b) we took the waitress' offer to sit at a table in a corner far from the sushi bar even though I saw 2 empty seats at the bar at the time.
This was how we had our outrageous dinner. B's sushis came within 10 minutes after order was taken, and finished in 20 trying hard to wait for my tempuras to come so we could eat together. During this period plus 15 mins more thereafter, we had chased for my food for at least 5,6 times, every time being brushed off that the tempuras were being prepared and it took time. Come on, 45 minutes? I didn't order for a whale to be deep fried! We totally lost our patience in the last attempt to get some attention from the team of 3 serving staff by waving madly and demanded our order to be served right away or we would cancel and leave. Then we got the genuine answer, apparently they only had 1 tempura chef working on the night hence the delay. Should they'd told us at the beginning I would have decided differently on my food choice!
So after a good 50 minutes I finally had the tempuras, and B decided to order more sushis so we could eat together. Ridiculously this time, it's B's turn to wait till I finished before the food arrived. This absurdity went on for 3 rounds before we could have a proper eat-together moment when the complimentary fruit came!
My observation on service? The sushi chefs and serving staff paid unparalleled attention to the VIPs and long term customers who sat around the sushi bar at the expense of those seldom patrons who were being put in a far fetched corner. When we paid and left, nobody bothered to say even a single "arigatogozaimasu" like you would so take it for granted to get from even the cheapest Japanese restaurant in town. Nope! However, while waiting in the lift lobby swearing that we would never come back despite the food quality, 2 seemingly VIPs were being escorted to the lifts and were being thanked repeated times for their patronage!?!? Clearly we were being discriminated even though we just paid a bill worth (or not worth?) 1500 bucks.
