I've been waiting for this place to open for a bit! Stopped by for the first time today. I'm an American expat, somewhat of a BBQ connoisseur as I've lived in N. Carolina and other parts of the US south and still have a passion for well cooked BBQ. The pulled pork at 85 was a 10 out of 10, a score I wouldn't give out easily. They truly focus on the pork first and it shows in the final product. Maybe my favorite aspect of the meal was the BBQ sauce choices. Usually, especially in N Carolina, you'll only be able to order Carolina BBQ with that particular shop's proprietary sauce. Most commonly a vinegar based sauce. 85 does it right and lets you choose between an east coast style vinegar sauce, a south favorite mustard base or the "typical" tomato base that most people know as BBQ sauce. All three are great! I'm guessing they are all homemade as well. Do it up right with fries, slaw and some sweet Carolina tea and you'll swear you're sitting back in a restaurant on the Carolina shore. It's that authentic. FTW, the coleslaw is somewhat of a work of art. Most slaw is just mayo drenched cabbage and shouldn't really appeal to anyone in their right mind. 85 may have just redefined my definition of slaw, it was worth writing about. If you're not from the US and/or never experienced some wicked good 'cue, look no further. Admittedly, you'll pay a bit less for the stuff back in the states but I can imagine what the shop rent must be here in central and you can't blame the guy for trying to make a buck! All considered, you're paying a pretty fair price for a quality product. One more thing, the place was clean as a whistle which, isn't typical of your adverage BBQ joint...big points here for 85. Oh, and just a suggestion, they do hold private events at the restaurant if you need to throw a cool party...that being said, it might be worth calling ahead and making sure they're open to the public before you head out promising your friends an amazing dinner.
