As a friend of ours was in town for a visit, we decided to have a girls lunch to do a bit of catch up without the boys. And what did we think to eat? Everything the boys hated: vegetables.Ovocafe is the second branch from the Ovo Group. They started as a furniture store and then expanded by creating a cafe in Wanchai's old wet market. The Central branch is located in a building which houses quite a number of new restaurants. The cafe itself is located right next to a grocery store that sells organic food. It was fairly busy on Sunday but I was still able to get a table. We were, however, informed there was 90 minute dining time. This was not stressed and we weren't kicked out after 90 minutes. They also now have a limit of one order per person. It's been a while since I went to the Wanchai branch so I'm unsure if they have changed as well. However as this has a 10% service charge where as the Wanchai branch doesn't, this is clearly more like a restaurant as there was actual service. The Wanchai branch is really more self service.
Menu at the Central branch seems to have a lot more options. It's in English and Chinese with plenty of photos. The menu also highlighted items that were Buddhist friendly and vegan friendly as well. Decor is bright and sunny. There is a large communal table on one side along with an open kitchen.
Tofu Heaven ($48). They had a summer seasonal menu and I decided to try the drink from there. This is a tofu smoothie with brown sugar. A little tofu to start my healthy lunch. The drink was thick and creamy. There wasn't a lot of tofu flavor as it was covered with the brown sugar which gave it a more coffee type taste. I liked it quite a bit. Slim Power ($98). This dish was labelled both vegan and Buddhist friendly. A plate of konjac noodles in tomato sauce and lion's mane mushroom and spinach. There was a blurb on the description saying how super healthy lion's mane mushroom was and how konjac noodles were low in calories. I love shirataki/konjac noodles and I have no idea how to prepare it properly. I think that's why I keep ordering this at restaurants. I love the way the noodles are so chewy and smooth. I usually have them cold so to have them as a complete substitute for pasta was really different. And it worked. I liked it. The sauce was bit on the tart side. The bread was fairly good. I especially liked the bits of sundried tomato in the bread. The food was quite good and well ... I felt healthy afterwards. And oddly enough, it was quite filling. I'll be back when I need to do a going green kind of day.
