A friend of mine was staying at a hotel in SYP and we decided to cruise down High Street for a meal. It's not really my favorite place to dine, what with all the terrible Castelo Concepts abominations, as well as things that look even worse. It wound up being a good call. I have discovered subsequently that this is a "sister restaurant" (whatever that means) to the now defunct Sanche, which latter I was fond of. This I think is a better concept, as it is more affordable. I'd list the prices and descriptions of the things we got, but unfortunately U Hang's website is very out of date and nothing that we ordered, besides the pancake, is actually listed on the dinner menu!
Vegetable Mandu

My friend was pescatarian, so it was a no-meat meal. The first thing we got was vegetable mandu. In my opinion, the best Korean dumplings are better than every other country's dumplings. As a result, these were disappointing. Mostly they were just soft and mushy, inside and out-- no crispness at all to the exterior. The flavor was decent; I was worried that the sweet potato would make them too sweet, but that was not so-- it did add to the whole mushiness factor. Rating: Decent, but would not order again.
''poutine''

The "poutine" was tteokbokki, short rib gravy, and cheese. Yes, my friend preferred not to eat meat, and it would be better for those reasons that the menu didn't advertize that the gravy was meat-derived, but still, it was worth it. This was the consensus favorite at the table. I've said before that I like french fry substitutes in poutine-like dishes because fried potatoes are prone to sogginess. Crafty Cow does a pretty good "poutine", but I think here both the cheese and the gravy are better. Rating: Decadent, and highly recommended if you want decadent. Probably not if you're watching the waistline.
Corn Tacos

We got these corn tacos. I was surprised that they weren't terrible. Mostly, it was corn kernels, followed by, and I'm guessing as I don't have a menu available, mayo, ketchup, and mustard. The tortillas were sub-standard, kinda like the frozen ones you can sometimes get at City'Super. Rating: Not terrible, but corn and mayo is a little bit too Asian for me.
Japchae

The Japchae came with tofu and was served hot. While not a stand-out of the meal, it was in my opinion nicely flavored. For something that is typically a side and a filler, this did its job, and then some. Rating: Get it in a large group, but skip it for smaller numbers.
Seafood Pancake

The seafood scallion pancake (menu description, perhaps out of date: clams, mussel, prawn, squid, house-made chilli soy sauce) was excellent. Nice and crispy, very scallion-y, non-fishy, with a subtle sauce, we all liked this a bunch. Rating: Highly recommended.
Korean Fried Cauliflower

Finally, we got the KFC: Korean Fried Cauliflower. Be careful, there are literally two things on the menu called "KFC" and one is cauliflower and the other is chicken. As someone who thinks menus should be maximally unambiguous, this bothers me. Anyway, the dish was good. Not as good as the KFC at Yardbird, but then, that's a different level of competition. My main complaint was that it was a bit soggier than desired. The sauce and cauliflower were fine, however. Rating: Not bad as a veggie choice, but not a must-have.

Finally, I'll mention that I liked the kimchi (one small bowl for free; extra at $18), but did not think it was as good as Sanche's. I also continue to believe that free, free-flow kimchi is a requirement of Korean establishments.

At the end of my review of Sanche, I said that the food ticked all the boxes, but that I wouldn't come back. My reasons were that it was pricey and pretty standard. This place is less pricey and much more inventive. Plus, given how much I loathe the other High Street offerings, I'm almost certain to come back here next time I need to eat in the area. They still seem to be trying to find an identity-- witness the extensive menu changes that their own website doesn't keep up with-- but I hope they survive. Good Korean food on this part of the Island is not easy to find, and Sanche/ U-Hang, for me, do very good food. Rating: Excited to come back, wish the dumplings were better.
