As a resident of Kennedy Town, I was super excited to try out this new restaurant. I love Mexican food and read-up ahead of time that this place was being opened by a famous Californian chef. Of course, by the time it opened the hype had spread through the city. The first time my boyfriend and I tried going it was full, with waiting time being one hour.

Yesterday it was full again but we decided to wait since it was 'only' about 30min. The reception desk encourages people who are waiting to take a seat on the terrace, where you can order drinks or snacks.

FOOD
We ordered guacamole and chips and three tacos each. I must admit the tacos overall were pretty good. We especially liked the chicken tacos and shrimp tacos - they were well seasoned. The fish tacos and beef tacos were ok - good, but not spectacular. We ordered a second serving of chicken tacos each because they were great, but also because the portions are small and we were still hungry.

But turning to the guac - that is surely the most overpriced guac in restaurant history. HKD150 for a portion with some tortilla chips.. That's US$20. Would this chef ever be able to charge that much for guac in his native California? For that price the restaurant had better produce the best guac on Earth. However, when they deliver your order you realise that what you're paying for is the 'show' as well as the food itself. The waiter brings a pestle and mortar, two avocados and a bunch of ingredients on a tray to your table, and proceeds to assemble the guac in front of you. For me, this would work if the waiter prepared it with a real flair and maybe went through the various ingredients on their tray, giving you a real sense that you can adjust the guac to your own taste. However instead you're asked if you want 'everything' and we did because their selection included all the things a normal guac should have anyway - cilantro, onion, tomato, etc. Maybe they could have suggested a few slightly more original flavourings for us to try (diced jalapeno perhaps or a variation with mango?) to make the experience more exciting.

All in all, given the price and 'show', the guac was very mediocre. It lacked salt and lime juice, we had to ask for more - but that's a personal preference.

We did not try their drinks last night, but hear they're good - although again, quite pricey at about HKD130 a pop.

SERVICE
We were approached by about 4 different servers during our 1-hour dinner. Overall it felt like there was a lot of confusion on the floor among the staff. We had to wait a while to get a refill of chips and waited even longer  for our bill. Whoever approached us though was always friendly, which is important.

 ATMOSPHERE
The place is very popular among locals and non-locals alike. The restaurant and terrace outside was absolutely packed the whole time we were there. Definitely not a place to go if you are looking for an intimate conversation.

Overall, I don't know if I would recommend this place... Food is good, but I just feel the hype and the price don't match what you're actually getting. And the price on that guac is criminal!
