Stopped in to this neighborhood place one Friday night with a friend. It was completely full, but fortunately someone else was just leaving. It is a small izakaya-type place with a sushi bar and about a dozen tables. The service was quite good, though the ladies were very busy. Friendly and happy to explain (in Cantonese or English). They had a main menu in Cantonese and a picture version in English. We had:
-- A little complimentary appetizer dish of beans and vegetables in a light sauce. (Yummy)
-- A medium-size mixed sashimi platter. The fish was all tender and succulent, with a nice mixture of flavors.
-- A dish of beef stewed in a soybean (miso) sauce. Quite delicious, though the beef was too fatty.
-- Mixed vegetables. (Well, Momma always said to eat some vegetables, so we did.)
-- Beef with Tofu. This is a combination I have not seen elsewhere, and we liked it. The soft, creamy tofu had absorbed the flavors of the beef sauce. Again, though, the thinly-sliced beef had too much fat on it for our taste.
-- Gyoza. This was disappointing -- the stuffing was nice, but the wrappers were soggy, like these had been kept in a steamer too long before being fried.
All in all, we thought the taste of the food was very good. The fatty beef is in keeping with the way many HK people like their meat, but was too much for us. The price was quite moderate (by HK-Japanese restaurant standards), and it would have been downright cheap if we hadn't eaten the sashimi platter, which was $400 on its own.
A good neighborhood place.....we'll go back.
