Impromptu dinner with family who are not too adventurous in food, so B1 seems a safe choice, and it turns out to be quite a decent meal. Service - professional & attentive, despite a full house. There were 6 of us and varied number of courses were ordered. We were well taken care of especially when the waiter informed us of the order of courses served, and they came in sensible intervals. We were well taken care of especially when the waiter informed us of the order of courses served, and they came in sensible intervals. I am little bit on the OCD side, so you can imagine how secure I felt there and then, after being traumatised in the past by having the peking duck slices and other hot dishes served at the same time in quite a few expensive restaurants. I hope the 10% service charge do go to the floor staff.
Price - mid-range by TST standard and the food & service here are comparable.
Food - Nothing fancy or innovative but good old solid stuff. I am putting this one under my "safehouse" tag - always reliable.
Bread - French white (? just a glimpse as they got devoured rather quickly) & Focaccia (?) - decent bread.
Oysters - 3 types 11 in total - all fresh & clear of grits - the French 4-seisons was my favourite - sweet aftertaste.
Antipasti - iberico: tender & taste was well balanced, bellota quality, the capers & olives sprinkled on top did nothing to the ham, would prefer fruit paste or fresh figs or aged balsamic if absolute must. Smoked eel: faintly smoked but tender, would prefer more eel taste and fat. Cheddar & bread stick: strange choice of cheese for antipasti, would prefer matured cheddar if must, the bread stick was a nice crunch to go with the the soft cheddar. Salad on side: fresh and dressed lightly to clear the palatte. For the price $138 (or $198?) I won't complain, but chargrilled veg. marinated in oil & vinegar would be a nice addition.
Lobster bisque - creamy texture and just the right consistency for me (slightly thicker than single cream). There wasn't an intense/exploding lobster flavour but pleasant enough through to the end. I would prefer less paprika (?) though.
Caesar salad - leaves, croutons & bacon bits are all in good order - light, fresh & crisp. My sis liked the sweetness of the leaves and judging by their size, these are truely the lettuce hearts. I would like more parmesan & anchovy in the dressing. But then again, it is more of a personal preference.
Sirloin, rib-eye, pork chop - steaks: juicy and even though they were not the most beefy ones I ever tasted, I guess the price rightly reflects the grade and I was happy with what I paid for. Pork chop: tender but mild in taste (afterall it's US chop), mother liked it though. All meats served with a red wine sauce (menu says otherwise) which was pleasant but not exciting. My loved ones didn't mind at all as they preferred their steaks with mustard. I am traditional folks and like pork with fruity sauce. I didn't taste the French green beans & scalloped potatoes but the beans looked crisp & the potatoes moist.
King prawns tagliatelle in shrimp sauce - prawns were mild in flavour but well charred, pasta al dente, & the sauce was slightly on the tangy side to compliment the shrimp flavour. I am reasonable with frozen tiger prawns (live ones are expensive) as long as they are properly frozen, defroze, & cooked, as they did here. The sauce on its own was well worth the price they charged. The balsamic on the rim was a nice touch - acid person I am.
Apple crumble with vanilla ice-cream, dessert platter (baked cheese cake, creme brulee, & chocolate mousse) - nice presentation, average hotel standard, nothing to wow about. Apple crumble: I enjoyed the fillings (sweet tangy sauce with not too mushy apple chunks) but the crumble on top could do with more butter and a few minutes more in the oven. BTW, where's the cinnamon? The boys liked the baked cheese cake topped with chopped strawberry sauce, I found this clever as the sauce did save the rather mild cheese flavour. Mother is not a dairy person but she liked the creme brulee. I didn't get a spoon in but the top looked crunchy and the custard smooth. Sis liked the chocolate mousse which was more of a chilled sabayon density rather than light & airy. It's not my favourite intense, coffee-sharp version but pleasant enough to end a meal.
Coffee - the milk was warm enough to keep the coffee hot, another reason to make B1 my comfort dine-out.
Everyone in the family was happy with the meal (which is rare) and I would definitely be back.
