Sushi! I'm a big know-nothing. I eat it regularly, but I feel I don't learn anything, ever. It's all so simple-- I can tell when a balance of subtle flavors is off, but if you just hand me a fatty piece of fish and then I eat that fish, I think "that was good." Was it great? Transcendent? Ordinary? As a super-non-taster who needs loads of garlic and chilis to taste anything, I honestly don't know. We started with the scallop sashimi. The server recommended scallops, and we all liked them, so there you go. These were very creamy and melt-in-your-mouthy. I thought they were vaguely fish-y. Great, B+.
You really gotta watch the prices at this place. The tuna belly was $$$, so we went with the salmon belly, the swordfish belly, and the sweet shrimp. As we were 3 dining, I only got to try the shrimp and the swordfish. Swordfish belly was new to me, and pretty good. (B) I don't really like raw shrimp, but the sweet shrimp here were nice and firm and inoffensive. (C+)
We originally ordered the shishito peppers, which I am very fond of, but it turned out that they were out of those, and the server recommended the grilled eggplant. I'm going to NOT recommend the grilled eggplant. The flesh is OK, but uninteresting and the skin is tough to bite through. OK, C-
The assorted tempura was shrimp x3, sweet potato x2, and (alas!) eggplant x2. The shrimp were genuinely fantastic-- some of the best shrimp tempura I've had. Hot, and tender, and juicy, and quite flavorful. (A+) The eggplant was good, and certainly better than the grilled stuff, but I was suffering eggplant fatigue at this point. (B) I did not get to try the sweet potato, but heard it was good. (No rating)
The rolls were very well presented and quite thoroughly constructed. The softshell crab and avocado roll had big chunks of avocado, perfectly ripe-- creamy but not mushy. The crab was hot and crunchy and meaty. The roe was a nice touch, and I was a fan. Great, B+
The spicy tuna roll was not so-called because it is spicy. Why they call it that, I don't know. It was covered in seaweed sprinkles, that gave it a very attractive appearance. All the same, I didn't particularly care for it. It was OK, but nothing that impressed. C+The meal was about $400 each with two beers a person. The server was friendly and helpful, but perhaps a little overbearing. There are sushi places I'd come back to, but probably not this one. It's still good. B
