Fortune Kitchen is located in Causeway Bay, serving traditional Cantonese dishes. I walk by here a lot and actually eat in the Vietnamese restaurant next door. But I was always curious about this place. But eating Chinese food on your own is a bit daunting.Recently, they have started lunch sets and afternoon tea sets that seem more easy to accommodate solo eaters like me. Recently, they have started lunch sets and afternoon tea sets that seem more easy to accommodate solo eaters like me. Before whenever I walked by, it was seemed more appropriate for more than one. Boyfriend came with me to give it a try after I woke up late from a night shift.
When we arrived around 2, they presented us with the afternoon tea set menu. Menu in English and Chinese. During afternoon tea session, there is no 10% service charge and no tea charge. Sets include a drink or soup and a vegetable. Pretty good deal! Boyfriend and I chose two afternoon tea sets and two snacks to share.
The set included a daily soup or soft drink. I chose the daily soup. This was actually pretty good. I believe it was lotus root with pork. It was savory and felt very much like it was double boiled.
Set also included vegatables. These were boiled with a dollop of oyster sauce. Vegetables were fairly fresh. Can't really say anymore as it was standard vegetables.
Fortune Kitchen Signature Stewed Conpoy Chicken in Bittern Sauce with Chicken Oil Rice ($68). As it said signature....why not order it? It was actually really good. The chicken was moist and flavorful. It was topped with conpoy which added even more flavor to the chicken. The rice was not too oily but still had the strong taste of chicken oil that makes this type of rice so loved. For this price, a good deal.

Deep Fried Eggplant with Salt and Herbs ($28). We ordered a couple of snacks and clearly didn't think portion size was so large! It said snacks and I expected snack size. Large portions indeed. The eggplant was fairly crispy and soft on the inside. Well seasoned with salt, it felt like a vegetarian version of deep fried fish fillets. There were also some crunchy deep fried basil leaves.
Braised Chicken Wings with Strawberry ($32). This was a bit not too impressive as I expected the sauce to at least be more than just drizzled over the wings. I expected it to be completely covered with the sauce. The sauce was very sweet and tasted like strawberry jam. The wings were a bit over cooked.
I was a bit surprised the afternoon tea sets were so inexpensive and good value for money. The snacks were ok, not that great but portion size was huge for snacks. The best was the chicken so I'd probably be back for that.
