Writing this review of this lovely Japanese sushi restaurant together with a bit of a personal response to some foodie below who said - why do people even bother queuing up to eat at the Chain stores - why not spend just that little bit more and have a better sushi experience here? The answer is because you're going there at lunch time and its much cheaper! Like here and Kenjo - lunch sushi set is only around $200 +/-.However recently I ate there during dinner time. However recently I ate there during dinner time. Per piece of sushi was on average, $30-90. Per single piece! And most of the ordinary, nothing too special fishes or shellfishes were already $50-70 per piece.
So for someone like me - I was spending around $600 and still not full, as it only gets me around 12 pieces of sushi. It certainly is unfair and not worth the money in my opinion. Kenjo's sushi sizes are slightly bigger than here, being the more traditional Japanese above-average style sushi where people order by the piece. Kenjo has much lesser choices though, although Kenjo's fish/sushi are usually paired more correctly with the right garnishes and sauces, also the presentation of the food is much better at Kenjo.
Sushi Hiro meanwhile is selling the more modern, ladies like small size sushi's, which should have been served in pairs by default if they choose to use this cut size. In Japan, a lot of shops serve sushis in pairs because of this reason - the traditional style sushi's were too big for ladies, so they splitted it into 2's - even though the Unit called 一贯 is the same whether its for 1 piece or 2 pieces, and still is a perennial confusion.
That's why if you patrons a top end Sushi shop in Japan - you only get 1 piece of Nigiri sushi. Whereas at kaiten sushi-trains to mid-range or even slightly above mid-range sushi shops, you are forced to order sushis by the pair, with 2 pieces of smaller nigiris.
For me, Sushi Hiro is not worth the money because the sushi's are so small, yet I'm paying the full price and around $60-70 easily for what I would categorise as mid-range sushi size and taste wise relative to Japanese high standards. Obviously they make up for this by having very fresh selections of fishes and shellfishes, plus some appetizers are included during dinner time as part of the service.
Overall speaking, I think the sushi's here are great, but its not Japanese Edo-mae Top Sushi style enough in execution. In other words, slightly too plain and boring (and small) to be worth the money they're charging!
