One of my favorite things in Canada is the excellent Vietnamese food. And one of the items I always got on the go is a banh mi. Something that is sadly hard to find in Hong Kong. I heard about this place called Banh Mi Chung.A small take away only shop in Tai Kok Tsui, it only serves banh mi. No other mains. It's also never open when we walk by as it closes after it sells out. But on this evenin,g it just opened! And in we went! The place is basically one stand with all the banh mi ingredients a

The place is basically one stand with all the banh mi ingredients and run by one person. Every banh mi is made to order.
Menu is in English and Chinese. There is no 10% service charge. Unlike other places in Hong Kong that serve varieties of banh mi, this place only serves one type. The choice is only in size. You can also add a bit of money to make it into a combo that includes a soup and vegetable side.
Ordering is done by taking a number found at the door. Informing the owner how many you want and size. Then deposit the payment and the number in the box on the wall nearby.
We ordered a 9 inch banh mi ($50) to share and asked to cut it in half for us. He asked if wanted chili peppers and said only on one side. It was pretty good. The bread wasn't the actual Vietnamese one but that is not his fault as it's next to impossible to source this bread in Hong Kong. But the fillings were quite good. There was Vietnamese sausage, roast meat, pork floss, carrot, radish, liver pate and cilantro. The pickled carrot and radish was fresh and sour enough. The sausage was savory and not overly peppery as some places I've found. The only thing I wish was more pate but other than that, the whole thing wasn't too bad.
Price was not expensive. Portion was generous. One of the better banh mi in Hong Kong.
