I was kind of looking forward to Le Marron – reviews were good, setting is kitschy but cute, menu a bit standard but affordable, and most importantly, BYOB. I’m sad to say that not a single dish impressed any of us (except for portion size), and though I don’t think we overpaid, I can’t imagine going back. I will say the service and the setting are great, and BYOB drinking in such an appealing environment did make up for part of the food quality shortfall. This is a food review however, so I’ll

There are 2 set menus (HKD 450 and HKD550) and an a la carte menu. To others trying this place, I’d recommend the HKD 550 set or the a la carte as we all chose the cheaper set and the choices on the other menus did appear more exciting.
We had:
Caesar Salad or Baked Escargot
-Escargot were not sufficiently garlicky or buttery, but they were tasty enough to finish. And don’t get me wrong, I LOVE a well-made Caesar salad, but it’s just weird to serve this on a tasting menu, unless you’re making it fresh at the table.
Pumpkin or Mushroom Soup
-The mushroom soup was too creamy but the pumpkin was pretty good –chunks of pumpkin scattered in a thick but not creamy broth
Grilled Kurobuta Pork Chop or Salmon fillet
-Extremely generous portions of both – largest salmon fillet I’ve ever seen at a restaurant (both in thickness and width) and two giant pork chops per serving. Sadly they were both under-seasoned and just a bit overcooked - nothing memorable.
Chocolate pudding or Poached Pear or Crème Brulee
-Okay these were pretty good – I only tried the poached pear, which was almost unsweetened and arranged in slices into a rose. Not overcooked and it leaned on the sweetness of the pear along with the richness of the red wine to great effect. A perfect dessert for people who don’t like dessert, and I heard good things about the other desserts as well.
Le Marron is not a great place for food – what we were served was very average high-end(ish) HK-style Western food. Nothing was terrible, but I forgot the food immediately after eating it (except that giant salmon filet). Perhaps try the other menus if you go.
Le Marron however, IS a great place to get a group of people together for some wine in a warm, inviting atmosphere, over a relatively affordable but forgettable meal. So there is that.
