My friends and I have been going here on a regular basis on most Wednesdays for their pub quiz. There are two quiz masters who rotate are both excellent so we've really been liking it but the attitude of the waitstaff and management are getting progressively worse and worse.They used to have a Pie and Pint special for HKD 88 which honestly, wasn't too shabby. It's definitely not the greatest meal, but overall fine. But they got rid of it on Wednesdays (but lo and behold, there are advertisements
They used to have a Pie and Pint special for HKD 88 which honestly, wasn't too shabby. It's definitely not the greatest meal, but overall fine. But they got rid of it on Wednesdays (but lo and behold, there are advertisements in the bathroom proclaiming this deal happens every day). But if you try to substitute tea (as in hot water and a tea bag) for their San Miguel pint, they have a melt down. I told them surely a tea bag costs less than beer, but they wouldn't have any of it. Since they got rid of that promotion, if we do decide to eat there (and we often don't due to merely mediocre food and bad service) the next meal available is about HKD 120.
Most of our team don't drink for various reasons (allergic and actual medical reasons) and soda is too sweet to drink so we often get ice water, tea or sparkling water. But oh, the amount of shade they throw at us! Even asking for hot water to refill the tiny tea pots is a gamble; yesterday they were fine actually, but other days, they have said they will refill hot water for only 1 of the 3 tea pots. Requests for tap water are routinely ignored.
This overall disdain has been quietly building but what made me actually write this review (second time ever on OpenRice) is the new rule they instituted last night. Should there be a tie for two teams, the team with the higher spend will win. Of course, this is completely within the management's discretion and I get that their goal is to make more money. But the way they are so rude and obnoxious to the point where they're choking the golden goose seems like it will result in less money in the long-term. To alienate a group of trivia lovers like our team with bad service pretty hard to achieve but they are just about managing.
If you're going here just for food, the steak and ale pie is quite good. But don't expect an actual "pie". It's more like a deconstructed pie, with steak and gravy topped off with a piece of pastry. I personally like it but I can imagine that it's not everyone's cup of tea. If it weren't for the quiz masters, I would never bother going back. But even with the quiz, they've really been testing my patience over the last couple of weeks so let's see how many times I will end up going back.
