I took my family to dinner here when they were visiting Hong Kong last month. As my parents are Australian, I was a little apprehensive about taking them to such a 'local' restaurant. As I've never really eaten Chiu Chownese food before, I was a bit unsure what to order, so I followed the advice from the waiter and got a few different dishes from the menu.
We started with a mixed plate of entrees, with thinks like soy-sauce duck and marinated jellyfish, which was AMAZING!
Next, the waiter suggested we try some seafood. I am not a huge fan of crabs and prawns, due to the amount of effort needed to get a tiny bit of meat...but the 'pissing prawns' were great. I've tried them several times on Cheung Chau, but the ones here were much fresher and I thought better prepared. I loved the fried garlic and chili which came with them.... YUMMY!!
After the prawns, came the crab. Again, I'm not an expert on the good and bad points of crab, but the meat was sweet and tasted delicious.
My mum (being an Aussie) wanted some sweet and sour pork and fried rice. The pork was served with a type of mayonnaise over the top. It freaked me out at first, but after taking a bite, I think I'm going to keep a bottle in the fridge at home for when I order take-away. The sourness of the mayo, somehow balanced the sweetness of the sauce in a really clever way. I will DEFINATELY order that next time I'm there!
The last dish I want to mention was the fried rice. Apparently, it was a Chiu Chow specialty fried rice. I was pretty surprised when I took a mouthful and tasted black pepper. Don't get me wrong, it tasted REALLY nice...but it was a bit of a surprise!
So, were there any bad points...?? Well, I have to admit the price of the seafood was a bit exxy. Also, the restaurant looked a bit old and was fairly noisy. That said though, I don't think its any worse than any other normal Chinese restaurnt I've been to...So it wouldn't stop me from going there again.
The most amazing thing about our dinner there though was a comment from my mum..."It's the first Chinese meal I've ever had where I like EVERYTHING that was served." I think that really says it all...
