This very average-looking canteen is located just outside New Town Plaza and provides an alternative to the expensive eateries inside the mall. As I understand it, Pai Tau was the name of the village before it got swallowed up by the Sha Tin development. I would assume, then, that the canteen has been around for quite a while. This Fat-Kid husband and wife duo had gone there once before and eaten, oh, let's see--Western fried rice and beef chow fun, I think it was. I remember that we had wanted dishes the canteen wouldn't be likely to screw up. I also remember that we hadn't been particularly inspired by the food, service, or décor. In fact, I seem to recall having felt a bit urpy afterward. Then we'd returned a few months ago for an afternoon snack, and I'd had the chicken sandwich slathered with mayonnaise.

Well, most canteens don't even offer chicken buns since the porkchop seems to be more in vogue, and I crave them sometimes, you know? Growing up in the West with desiccated, tasteless white breast meat, the dark-meat sandwich was a real ephiphany and so I probably appreciate them more than the average Hongkonger. Tonight, we happened to be in town and I just had to get my fix.

The server informed us that since afternoon tea had ended, the kitchen would still do a chicken bun but they'd be forced to charge us full price. Our dishes and drinks--lemon tea and ice coffee--arrived quickly and I was amused to note that each sandwich was of a different shape, one oblong and the other rounded like a hamburger bun. Apart from that small quirk, the presentation seemed to have improved since the last time and I really appreciated the fact that my bun had been toasted to crisp perfection. The meat, juicy as ever, had likely been marinated in Maggi-Würze. If this had been my canteen, though, I would have added some lettuce, so add a deduction here for the lack of greenery on the plate.

Altogether, the bill came to $88. I can't call that cheap; it would have been nice to see a sandwich and drink combo price more in line with what Pai Tau offers at lunchtime.
