時新快餐店 (English name: Si Sun Fast Food) is Hong Kong's first fast food hamburger. Located in Hung Hom, it open in 1963, it served burgers even before McDonald's arrived. It was extremely popular. But due to property development, the place closed in 2017. It seemed for good but then two shops have re-emerged. Both in the Hung Hom district. The only difference is one is owned by the older brother, the other by the younger one. I decided to try the one owned by the older brother first. Younger brot
The one owned by the older brother is called SHKB1963. It's located next at the SAV Hotel. There are serveral indications that this is the old shop in a new location.
The shop has a more chic fast food feel.
Menu is in English and Chinese. You order and pay at the counter where they will give a pager for pick up. But as it wasn't busy, they brought to food over to us. They have only one combo set that is $38 and is absolutely not flexible. You can't do any sort of upgrade to the burger at all.
Or you can create a set by order a burger, snack and only a minimal discount on drinks. I thought that was pretty pricey.
We decided to just go with the $38 burger combo which includes a plain burger and hot drink. Cold drinks you need to add money. Drinks were ok. Though I think my ice lemon tea was a bit too bitter.
We shared a half portion of fries for $8. For a half portion, this was a lot. I wonder what a full portion was? The fries were really crispy and hot. Pretty good.
For the $38 combo you can only choose the single patty burger. You do get a choice of sauce so I chose their signature mayo. It was pretty good. The meat was moist and juicy with a good ratio of onions ground into it. The bun was slightly toasted and fluffy. The sauce was not enough. Everything held together well. A good decent fast food burger.
Prices were a bit steep in the drinks department. But the burger prices were cheap and reasonable. Tasted pretty good, too.
