I haven't visited Ozu since its renovation and I could still remember the scene at their epic re-opening party. I guess it is no better time than now to go experience the differences of this friendly Japanese bar. Compared to before, the bar is now offering a wide selection of yakitori with a much brighter ambient. There are also more tables for customers to dine in rather than just drinks. As usual, Ozu is still famous for its Japanese style photogenic cocktails , while a some flavoured housem
Apart from Mercedes me, I think Ozu does pretty good wasabi cocktail, which they have called it "Pasabi". The spicy flavour from the wasabi is quite strong and it went nicely with just a light taste of alcohol. The drink is also presented nicely in a smoking jar and you are supposed to fill the small cups for yourself! These little cups are double wall which is not only cute but to keep it chilled for a longer time. Smoked Rose 1.0 $80
Ozu takes their cocktails seriously as each of them has their unique presentation and playful element. This cocktail is served at our table by pouring smoking liquid into a martini glass. Dry ice is once again used so we were recommended to drink it once the smoke is gone. Though its name is rose, the flavour is strong in lychee flavour. The alcoholic taste is not strong which should be suitable for ladies or weak drinkers. Black Honey Sling $50
We would like to have a taller and more chilled drink for our next round so we have ordered their tallest drink from their HH menu which is a sling, similar to Singapore Sling, this drink uses blackberries with a bit of honey to give a hint of sweet taste.
It's refreshing and rather healthy in my point of view because there are lots of fruits in it! Sakeila $50
The last drink we have tried from the HH menu would be their Sakeila. Ozu bar is quite famous for their sake and they even infuse their own ones with different fruits. You may order them base on the size and they are charged at a very reasonable price. The sakeila tasted just like mixing sake with tequila. Surprisingly, the taste of each individual alcohol complimented each other nicely, eliminating that pungent spicy taste from the tequila, while the flavour of the sake can also be enhanced. The cocktail is also presented in a special container which I think is a giant wooden spoon. To be honest, it's a little bit hard to pour the drink into the tiny little cup, but it's also too embarrassing to drink right from the spoon. It would be more convenient for ladies if they can use another way to present this drink! Negitoro $58
The restaurant's food menu mainly focuses on yakitori but we have also found a negitoro sushi. The so-called sushi is actually much bigger than the normal ones. The taste of the sushi rice has a less acidity, instead, slightly savoury. We believed that they have mixed in a little bit of salted seasoning as well as seaweed to give some more flavour to the plain white rice. Some minced toro is also placed on top and they are fresh with a light fatty taste. A pile of deep fried onion is added on top to promote an extra crunchy bite to the soft negitoro. My friend absolutely loved it because it is a little bit different from the traditional Japanese style, yet still very delicious. Seafood Salad $70
As we are trying to have more veggies in our diet, we try to order at least a salad in a meal. This big bowl of salad is perfect to share between two. There is a mix of sashimi pieces sitting on some fresh salad greens like lettuce. As expected, a kind of sweet soya sauce is used to dress this salad, giving it a more flavourful profile.
Chicken meatball $48
I guessed it correctly that it is Tsukune, which means a minced chicken skewer. The presentation looks good and it is served with a raw egg and a kind of sweet soya sauce. After the first bite, I am surprised by how good it is because the texture is just on point with some crunchy cartilages in it while the chicken meat remained really soft and juicy. Some chop scallions are also added into the chicken skewer, making it extra flavourful. Remember to dip your skewer into the sauce, to make it softer and even smoother in texture!
Angus Sirloin Steak $108
There are two types of steak on the menu, wagyu and sirloin and we have chosen the leaner one which is also the recommended one from the restaurant. The steak has been just lightly cooked on the outside. The inner part remained extremely juicy and pink in colour. Therefore these thinly sliced bite size sirloin pieces are tender and flavour at the same time. Sirloin usually has a stronger beefy taste when compare to many other cuts, by sprinkling a generous amount of toasted sesame on top, it gives the delicate meat an extra level of nutty taste. Pork Belly $38
My friend likes fatty food so pork belly is ordered to build up the fat content in our belly XD . These fatty meat is cooked with some leeks to cut through that fattiness. Pretty basic but on point. Popcorn Chicken $58
Lastly, taking on the tradition of Ozu bar, the place is famous for their fried chicken. A basket of deep fried chicken pieces with a creamy cheese sauce for only $58! There are a small piece of skin attached to the meat underneath a very thin layer of seasoned batter. It's not too savoury because it leaves you the chance to dip the chicken into the cheese sauce. The taste of the chicken is not too strong so you may want to go crazy on their highly addictive cheese sauce! Overall, it is a much better improvement when compared to before. The bar feels more neat and clean inside and the menu is a lot better with good freshly grilled skewer, all at a very affordable price. Not to mention that HH price is also offered until 8pm for you to go with your bites!
We have ordered 4 cocktails with a good number of yakitori, and the bill comes at an affordable $600 for two after 10% SC!
