It seems that in Hong Kong you can find matcha shops straight from Kyoto. The first one that arrived was Nakamura Tokichi with over a 100 years of history, brewing that green tea to the masses. Unlike Nakamura Tokichi who strive to maintain tradition, Tsujiri has revitalized itself to becoming more young and fresh, focusing on franchising their brand.
The IFC branch is take away only. There are a few seats on the side but not that many. Menu (in English and Chinese) features ice cream, parfaits, drinks and cakes all featuring matcha. They also offer Houjicha and Hoikkado milk flavors who don't like matcha. But seriously, why would you go to a matcha centered place and order something else? It's like going to Cupping Room and asking for tea. As it's take away only, it's cash only and there is no 10% service charge.
I ordered a matcha soft serve to try. Price? $42. It said it was made with 8.0 Hoikkaido milk. That's a lot of cream. And it was super creamy. The matcha was not too strong but it was just enough to give you a taste. If you like super strong matcha taste, Nakamura Tokichi is much better. But this was fairly good along the lines of Via Tokyo. The cone was very crispy and sweet. It tasted more like a cookie.
Pretty delicious. I'll be back to try the sundae next time as it comes with a piece of cake stuck in it.
