Kwun Tong has a number of hole in the wall cha chaan tengs. Mostly located in industrial buildings with not name on the front as they wish to cater only to employees of the canteen. But if you find one, it's definitely an experience. One place is 海潮食堂 (English name: Ho Chiu Canteen). Definitely a hole in the wall cha chaan teng. The place is very tiny and cramped. Not the most hygenic as well. Menu is in Chinese only. There is no 10% service charge. Some daily menus are found on the wall. They also have photos of their signature dishes. Sets come with a drink except for the signature dishes where you have to add $10 for a drink.
The Toasted Sandwich with Egg and Onion ($29) was one of the signature items. At first we thought it would be mixed into the egg. Instead it was a thin slice of egg with the ginger scallion sauce that you get when you order chicken. The bread was so toasted, it appeared the edges were falling off. It was tasty though a bit too salty.
This is what we came for. The Pan Fried Vermicelli with Egg, Fish Sausage and Spicy Beef Brisket and Glutinous Rice ($56). From the menu, there was no smiley face but when it arrived ... there it was! A smile! The fish sausages were placed on top to look like a hat. Delightful! It was ok. A bit on the salty side. The fish sausges was deep fried so rather oily.
The beef brisket was very tender that it fell apart easily. The sauce was very spicy and just stayed on your tongue for a long time. But it went well with the vermicelli.
The food was a bit too salty for me but it was definitely a place to eat quickly and go. It was ok though I doubt we'd be back.
