One of those places that you see around and never go and when you try to go, it is closed because it works until 2ish pm and who does that? Oh but then you realize that it is open from 5:30am and then the world makes sense again. So after missing this place a couple of times, here we go! There is such energy in this place. So after missing this place a couple of times, here we go! There is such energy in this place. It's like the perfect hole-in-the-wall to go for up-close people-watching. I could come many times and not get bored of it. For one, I have already made friends with the hostess lady who keeps eagerly recommending dishes and letting me know what's hot, right off the steamer. Only the freshest!
BBQ pork buns
This used to be my childhood favourite and even though I don't crave it as much, it's the second best bao you can get. The first? Chicken pun, you read it here first (probably). Check them out if they're just out, which they were and then stuff your face.
Huge assorted filling bao
You need a bit of luck to get these because they're not always there. They're huge, something like 2.5 bao in one. It's not my cup of tea because it sort of fails the bao filling ratio for me but try for the wow factor and because the lady said so. Listen to the lady. Always.
Fried noodles
Mamma mia! I have not had this in the longest time. I was told that they're not around much and I believe it. I looked around and saw people getting it. This is one of those dishes you should come back for. The sauce on top softens just enough noodles for a smooth transition from chopsticks to mouth to throat and belly. Plus the meat and the spring onions makes the holy trinity. Amen.
Stir-fried choy sum
No respectable Chinese meal is complete for me without a healthy serving of veggies. Choy sum is a no brainer. You could feel the wok in this one.
Tip: come early, really early if you want to see the early risers and enjoy the freshest and most complete selection. But if you can't, ask for recommendations and be reassured that they'll honour your visit.
