Last time I set foot in Sham Tseng was at least 8 years old when I was here with my parents enjoying its famous roasted goose. There are no reasons for you to go there except you are living there. Similar to Sai Kung, Sham Tseng is one of the ‘back gardens’ in Kowloon, which has such tranquil living environment, a beach and nice sea-view. This is a separate small community from downtown HK that you need to make specific plans to visit!I was delighted to arrange a gathering at Indian Hot Pot for
I was delighted to arrange a gathering at Indian Hot Pot for my 2 high school classmates long-time-no-see, we definitely enjoyed the casual and unique atmosphere of the open space spacious restaurant. It has slightly reminiscent HK-western style decoration 10 years of age, with one plastic rose on every table and a neat wine bar full of glistening glassware at the corner. I was surprised to meet the boss of Clay Ovens by accident, who is warm and welcoming. He joined our conversation and share us his ups and downs over the years. How enjoyable it is to share our stories with some Indian beers Godfather, which has now since remained one of my favorites!
THE FOODS VERDICT D
Our favorite food is cheese naan(~30HKD), which is rich in cheese, sweetened and soft in texture.
The Ox-tongue Madras(椰汁咖哩牛舌,~88HKD) is non-spicy curry with slight aroma of sweet coconut sauce. The curry suits well with naan, and the ox-tongue dices are bouncy, not too chewy, well-cooked just right.
Baigan Bharta(免治茄子,72HKD) is actually non-spicy eggplant curry. Personally I like it so much, because the egg-plants are big and juicy and fully absorbed the spices aroma, despite it is a little bit too oily. My friends say it might be a bit too salty.
The Godfather, an Indian beer(35HKD), is filled with subtle honeyed aroma. It’s not as bitter as other beers, and I can taste the gentle hint of honeyed roundness as what I describe as ‘the background flavor’. Together with similar beers like Edelweiss and Hoegaarden, Godfather is now one of my favorites which I would recommend to girls!
They also have another Indian beer called Kingfisher(35HKD), its bitterness has proven that boys would enjoy it more.
The Masala tea(28HKD) here is distinct from those I ever tasted, because the spice flavor is unusually strong, and the taste less milky-sweet. It tastes like a bit charcoaled, medicine-like. It’s alright!
Garlic naan (~21HKD) is a little bit too dry and bitter for its garlic, I guess they forgot to stir-fry the garlic with butter and salt?
I enjoy being embraced and surrounded by high rise residential buildings under the dark sky when I was enjoying Indian food, exchanging views from Chinese and Indian culture with the boss, as well as gossiping about how our ex-highschool classmates long-time-no-see have been recently. The price is a little bit above average, but the atmosphere is so nice. Afterall, price is just one of the factors.
Both the the Tsam Tseng and Kennedy Town branch of the Clay Ovens are relatively hard to reach, but I would certainly visit its Sheung Wan branch, Basmati, at Connaught Road next time, and I will call my friends to visit the branches for sure!
