I often walk by this restaurant on my way into this building for lunch and wonder what it is. From the name, Tai Pai Tong, it sounds like a Chinese restaurant. Probably focusing on dai pai dong style food but well .. with air conditioning. I really didn't think much of it until one day boyfriend noticed the name and asked me if I ever tried it. I said, no. We're always up for Chinese food so we decided to give it a try.

What we found out when we sat down was ... it doesn't serve Chinese food at all. Well, no at all. It serves Western food with a few Hong Kong style classics thrown in. Bizarre? I thought so.

Menu is in English and Chinese. Though they have a special limited items on a wall in Chinese only. They have dinner sets so we decided to order one as boyfriend was avoiding shellfish and I wanted oysters. Sets included a salad, soup, appetizer, main and dessert for $499. No drink is included. Then we added on another main.

Asking for any sort of service was very cute. There is a little button that looks like something you'd find on a mahjong table. Press that for service. And it was prompt, too!

Tropical Punch ($48). Their drinks list had the usual cocktails and mocktails along with Hong Kong classics like ice red bean drink. But I wanted Guava Genius but they didn't have it available. So, my next option was tropical punch. This was ok. A mix of orange and pineapple juice with soda water.

Pino Coco ($58). Boyfriend had an alcoholic cocktail. A pina colada. It was a good blend of pineapple and coconut with a touch of rum, making it for a very sweet drink. I don't think they put much alcohol in it as it wasn't very strong.

Set Oyster with Seafood Platter Upgrade (+$38 per person). The dinner set included three oysters that were fairly fresh tasting and more on the crisp side than creamy as I usually like my oysters. But still fairly decent. An upgrade of $38 would give you one abalone, one prawn, razer back clams and a scallop. I wanted this so I added this upgrade. This came with a spicy dipping sauce that boyfriend adored as he said it was spicy, yet had several layers of flavor. The seafood was all fairly decent quality.

Smoked Georgian Sulgani Cheese ($58). While I was devouring my seafood platter, boyfriend ordered something he saw on the wall's daily specials. I had never had sulgani cheese before and this was really good. It was salty and firm. I would say, close to jerky. You pull it apart like string cheese. This was clearly addictive.

Eddy's Baby Pigeon ($98). The menu had pigeon as an appetizer and it was served Hong Kong style. With a crispy skin and moist meat. This is how I love my pigeon. It was super hot, obviously fresh from the fryer. The bird was well seasoned and not too oily.

Mushroom and Black Truffle Soup. Part of the set dinner, the soup was quite decent. You can taste the mushrooms without the over powering taste of truffle. A rarity as most places just over dose in truffle so you can't taste mushroom at all.

Ox Tongue with Wasabi and Honey Sauce. Appetizer that was part of the set dinner. This was excellent. The ox tongue was a thick cut and perfectly cooked to a medium rare. It had the right amount of seasoning. However, the only thing odd was the wasabi and honey sauce that accompanied it. I don't think it was needed.

Crab Meat and Mushroom in a Thai Red Curry Sauce. The other appetizer was this. A crab cake covered in a Thai red curry sauce. The crab meat was mixed with mushrooms and fairly ok. But the sauce used was amazing. The sauce was not only spicy (but not overpoweringly so that I couldn't eat it) but riche in coconut flavor as well.

Rice Cake in Black Truffle Cream Sauce. The last appetizer was their verson of a carbonara tteokbokki. The rice cakes were soft with a bit of chew. The cream sauce was rich and creamy with a touch of truffle that wasn't too strong. Something I appreciate.

Oven Roasted Bellota Iberico Pluma. The main I chose from the set was this. Basically, loin from the shoulder area of the pig. The meat was tender and juicy. It came with a gravy that clearly wasn't needed as the meat was well seasoned and not dry at all. It came with a mashed potato that wasn't creamy enough (not enough butter!) and side of salad.

US Cutlet Chicken Steak with Cajun Seasoning ($98). Boyfriend ordered this as he saw the words Cajun and was curious if it was really Cajun seasoning. Um...no. Not Cajun at all. Just a regular Hong Kong stlyled fried chicken. However, the chicken was fried fairly well with a crispy coating that wasn't too thick. The meat was moist and tender. Not dry at all. It came with a honey mustard sauce.

Dessert. The ending of our meal was the set dessert. This was a simple blueberry cheesecake. Creamy with a cookie base. It was ok.

We entered into this surprised as the name seemed Chinese but served Western fare. Wary of entering into something we'd regret, we were then surprised the food was actualy excellent. Perfectly seasoned and well cooked. What more can one ask for? Service was fine as well. Would probably return again.
