With a group of 6 wondering the streets of Sheung Wan we stumbled into Grassroots Pantry as they had seating and not everyone wanted a big filling meal. The decor is inviting and the seats comfortable. They have gone for a quirky approach with every single seat being different which is a way to add texture to the interior - in a way a reflection of what they're trying to do with the food as well - add different textural elements to make the dish "pop".
Service is friendly and accommodating - the waiter had to juggle some tables around for us to get a table of 6 because we did not book but he definitely made an effort and was polite. The whole ambiance is relaxing and spacious and so its a good hangout place in my opinion. I don't feel the air of pretentiousness that you might get in some other green "hipster" places.

The Maki Sushi roll is presented very well, tasted on point. They tried to be creative and substituted rice with another "cabr" element which was a bit powdery for my liking. It was akin to coconut shavings in texture. It didn't really taste of much... I would have appreciated some condiment to go with the dish and at over HKD120 I am not convinced of the value of the dish in terms of flavour and satiety.

Shanxi Noodles. Tasted fine but I do love my Shanxi Noodles. It had good crunch but lacked flavour for my tastebuds. Also not necessarily worth HKD130 for this dish as it's not really that creative to justify.

The mushroom Gnocchi was definitely tasty. I was expecting carbs but actually the "Gnocchi" itself is made from a variation of plants. It was akin to mini veggie kebab. At HKD180 its not cheap put on par with other Italian restaurants in terms of costs. I would be happy to order this dish again.

The vegetarian kebab did come with a very soft purple wrap - more like a chewy stretchy pancake.. The kebab was presented very nicely. Incorporated several different texture elements of soft and crunch. The kebab "meat" itself was akin to a nutty brittle. In fact I think the Gnocchi might have been more similar to a kebab than this brittle but it was flavorful. Cost wise was HKD180.

You can't really go wrong with Ice Cream sandwiches. Tasted delicious and probably one of the more conventional dishes they have on the menu.
Overall the whole meal was relaxing and enjoyable. Some items were a miss on my part but some items very enjoyable and something I would order again or try to replicate at home. Presentation of the dishes was pretty but that was about it for some of the items. I would definitely come here more often if the price point was more reasonable. I think HKD400 per person is quite pricey and I wasn't really that full so overall it's not great value for money. It's definitely a great place to brunch and have a nice healthy meal and catch up but for a dinner you might need to fork out quite a bit to feel completely full or just be prepared to snack on something when you get home.
However, when it comes to vegetarian options Grassroots Pantry is definitely a contender as a go to place. It's a similar dining experience to any other decent establishment within Soho Central and the prices you pay there with alcohol is going to be the same as this place. Don't expect it to be cheaper because it doesn't serve meat, that's not really the point.
