Upon recommendation. Booked in advance. The lady I spoke to was highly inefficient. It took 2 minutes and 3 seconds to make a simple reservation. The reservation process alone put me off slightly. Anyway. She shall be excused. I have not taken her efficiency into account when rating FKV's 'service'. Service:Even after disregarding the receptionist's inefficiency I have to complain again - the waitresses are also rather inefficient. My meal came with bread rolls. I waved them over at least 4 time
Service:
Even after disregarding the receptionist's inefficiency I have to complain again - the waitresses are also rather inefficient. My meal came with bread rolls. I waved them over at least 4 times making the same request - 'could i have the bread please?' but it was only after I don't know how long that my rolls rolled out. Not amused. Nevertheless they were all smiles, especially the Japanese lady, who was very nice and polite, very much like the traditional Japanese woman.
Environment: Very nice, really. Light wooden colors, airy and bright. There's an outdoor area for smokers, and large gas heaters. The indoor seats were quite spacious and the chairs were comfy. It also has a very high ceiling and is therefore not noisy. Sadly our 4-seater sat right on top of an open sewage..there was nothing flowing in it but still - it wasn't very nice. Is it meant to be part of the design? If it were, I have nothing to say. If it weren't, but a careless oversight, then it would be good if they could remedy it.
Food: The menu is elaborate and clear but is slightly unsightly - worn out. Reprint? Or use a more durable material?
The classic veg in a glass This is really good. I liked the mixture of different vegetables, mostly simple ones like broccoli, baby corn, red cabbage, capsicum, french beans, cucumber, mixed in a special dressing which was vinegar-based. Lots of different textures and flavours combined in one tall, transparent glass. There was one leaf in particular - which seriously had the texture of - a leaf. a freshly picked leaf. Interesting. Very chewy, thick, and slightly leathery. I didn't appreciate the taste of it but the texture was interesting.
Cream sauce spaghetti with rolls and tomato soup I had this. Cream pea sauce, not too thick, but it was filling. Pasta was cooked al dente, but i was hugely disappointed when the other ingredients included bacon, mushrooms, artichokes and some nasty-smelling scallops (?) I think they are scallops. There were 3 of them. I distributed them among the other diners. There is really nothing special about this pasta.
As for the soup: spicy, peppery, watery. Got onion and potatoes and tomatoes inside. Didn't like it. I don't like tomato-based soups in general. but this one was particularly disagreeable. I had a few spoonfuls and let it alone.
Boiled and seasoned eggplant: super delicious. Must eat more. Must give more. Mmm. Juicy and soft and mushy on the inside.
Grilled salmon with salad and rice set C ordered this. I tried one piece of salmon and finished what was left of the salad coz, I really like the veg heh. This whole thing looks good yeah? Yeah. It looks good. but tastes bland. The salmon - wasn't very fresh. It didn't taste like grilled salmon. It didn't even taste like salmon. It was flat and...I don't recommend the salmon here. Perhaps that's why they drizzled so much salad oil on top of this dish - because the salty/sour salad oil covers the blandness of the salmon. Salad oil mixed with rice or veg is yummy too, but it's fattening! ><
Mackerel fish, sashimi, tempura and appetizer rice set with E had this. Her comments: miso soup not strong enough, perhaps this is due to the fact that Farm Kitchen Vegi is a fusion Japanese restaurant and westerners prefer their miso soup prepared this way? Appetizer consisted of taro, carrot, yam, pork, lotus bulb, radishes, green beans, potatoes. Mackerel tasted just like any other grilled mackerel from any other Japanese restaurant. In other words, no surprises. Tempura was average. Did not go wrong here, thank God.
Deep-fried crab cake, grilled salmon with pesto and mashed potatoes, appetizer, with bread rolls. J ordered this. Crab cake was yummy because the exterior was very crisp and the interior was very soft. But that is just about how good it is. J said this item didn't really taste crabby at all. It was more like a deep fried potato cake. Pity. It just lost all its purpose there. Grilled salmon I had a bite of. No salmon taste, again. Expected. No expectations after tasting the grilled salmon. The pesto sauce was delicious though! Very strong, intense, grainy, and basil. The salmon for some reason perched onto of a small scoop of mashed potatoes. Didn't think highly of them either. So its' just the pesto sauce that tastes yummy.
Conclusion:
No urgent need to return. After all TST's not exactly the most convenient place for me to dine. If you wanna try the classic veg cup, sure - come but by all means don't hold your expectations too high for the other items. Not sure what dinner is like but it's not cheap either. To me, this whole organic/interesting decor/nice presentation thing is a gimmick, food quality isn't high but I know I shouldn't expect too much for the price they're charging. Hmm.
Another comment: the veg - you can purchase at the supermarket and make your own dressing at home. DIY. So much cheaper.
Departing thoughts: Organic. Is that why the salmon tastes different...?
