Came here for lunch as I had a sudden craving for Japanese. As I've never tried this place, I decided to come here for lunch. The restaurant specializes Nagoya style Japanese cuisine. Curious, decided to give it a go.The restaurant is located on two floors (21 and 22 floor) and when I pressed the elevator button, I arrived on the 21st floor. The restaurant is located on two floors (21 and 22 floor) and when I pressed the elevator button, I arrived on the 21st floor. However, their reception is on the 22nd floor so I had to trek up the flight of stairs to get a table. I have no idea why their set up is that way. Decor was dark and more like a bar.. After getting a table, I was not given a menu until the waiter came over and asked what I wanted to order and he noticed I was never given a menu nor a cup of tea. No apologies were given. So much for service. They had a reasonably priced lunch menu that included a miso soup, salad, appetizer and dessert. The menu was both in English and Chinese with hand drawn pictures of the meal. I decided on the grilled eel in Nagoya style (aka hitsumabushi).
The salad was had salmon sashimi and was dressed with sesame salad dressing. There salmon sashimi was fresh. However, there was just way too much salad dressing. The salad greens were literally soaked in it, so when I finished the salad, there was still a lot of dressing left in the bowl. Miso soup was bland and definitely not worth noting. Appeitizer was various pickled vegetables which were nice and crunchy. They give you a lot. The histumabushi was served with an explanation on how to eat it. There were three items. The first was the grilled eel on top of rice. The seasoning that accompanied it was spring onions, nori and wasabi. There was also a pot of soup. It tasted a lot like the miso soup. I was explained to eat it four servings. The first serving, you were to take a bit of the eel and rice and just eat it as that. I tried that and found the rice was lightly seasoned with sweet soy sauce and the eel was soft and a bit bitter from the grilling.
The second serving you were to place the seasonings on to the eel and rice. Trying that, it was basically the same as just the eel with rice but now I got a mouthful of wasabi.
The third serving was to take some of the rice and eel and pour the soup in. I tried that and liked this way the most. Having the soup some how got rid of the bitter grilling of the eel and made it sweet.
Here is what it looked like with the soup addition. The fourth serving was to repeat the serving method you liked the most. Obviously, I liked the additon of soup and finished the rest of my meal that way. However, I couldn't finish because serving size was huge. The bowl of rice was a lot as was the eel. I think this is the first Japanese restaurant I went to where serving size was actually large.
The lunch set included a dessert which was a chocolate mousse. This was not that great as there wasn't much chocolate flavor and wasn't creamy. Just very jelly in texture. The chocolate powder used to make the dessert also wasn't dissolved properly as the bottom of the cup was a layer of undissolved chocolate powder, making it taste grainy. The main lunch (the hitsumabushi) was pretty good and definitely interesting to try. However, the sides (dessert, salad, miso soup) was definitely forgettable. Service was a bit hit and miss. I might return.
