Despite being far away from the city, the Shatin Hyatt is pretty well-known for its various restaurants. Aside from the famous Peking Duck at their Chinese restaurant Shatin 18 (which I almost had a chance to try ), their bakery Patisserie, located next to the hotel lobby is also renowned for its baked goods.My parents and I were there on a sunny Sunday afternoon, and luckily tiny café wasn’t too crowded. We ordered a few tea sets to share (which my parents made me pay for because I have a job now -__-)I ordered a cappuccino as my drink. You can just tell this Patisserie isn’t exactly the expert in coffee..lol. They did serve it in a double-walled glass mug though which kept the drink nice and hot so I give them credit for that.
Sesame Charcoal Chestnut Roll Cake
It looked very pretty but unfortunately the cake was way too dry. They could have compensated with more cream…which by the way, didn’t taste too strongly of chestnuts either. I was a bit disappointed..My mom had a mango yoghurt which I cannot comment much on since I only had one bite. The portion is quite small for $30…
We had a sugar donut as well. They reheated it for us so it was nice and warm when they served it to us. The texture is nice and fluffy, although the baking soda taste was a bit too strong.
Now what this Patisserie is really famous for is this Shatin Apple Pie
Again they warmed it up for us and as you can see, the filling was nice and generous. The level of tartness was just right, and the apple chunks were cut pretty big so it still had some texture. However the crust was too moist which ruined it for me Another one of their specialties is their Shatin Honey Cake, which is only sold by the cake and not by the slice. We cut out a piece in the restaurant to try it out and saved the rest for breakfast the next three days XD
Again, it didn’t have that moist castella texture I was hoping for but the taste was on point. It has a mild eggy honey taste which was not too sweet at all.Just in case you’re interested, the honey they used for this cake came from a local bee farm. I always appreciate restaurants who make good use of local resources!
Anyhow, in general I find their baked goods pretty good but definitely didn’t live up to the hype. It is a pretty nice café to sit in though so I’d recommend this place for a relaxing afternoon tea.
