For those who have been to Shanghai and tried the food, the juicy fried stuffed dumplings at Yang's (小杨生煎) will likely induce salivation and an immediate urge to purchase a plane ticket. But wait! Situated in Tsuen Wan, home to many great cheap eats, the store was quite busy and I decided that take away would be the better option. The kitchen was walled by sound/heat proof glass, allowing everyone outside to watch the food being prepared. Good way to draw a crowd I thought, while at the same time feeling sorry for the chef who must be feeling lots of pressure from the spectators. However, the "kitchen show"definitely helped time pass by faster, as my order arrived in what felt like 5 minutes.

The dumplings had been inside the styrofoam box for around 15 minutes before I got to devour them. The bottom of the dumpling was fried to a crisp, but a bit too thick in my opinion - there was pieces of dough that I found to be uncooked.

The top of the dumpling had thin, chewy skin and the meat juices burst out of the puncture as soon as I bit into it. The skin had preserved it well - the juices were still piping hot! Meat inside was thick and quite heavy. I have no complaint against the quantity of the juices and the meat, but I found the broth to be light and the flavor to be weak, compared to the signature mainland-style heavy handedness. Perhaps it was a health conscious effort to tone down the sodium and oil, but when it comes to fried dumplings I expect and actually look welcome the grease and fat.

The Turnip Soup ($18) came with vermicelli and was garnished by egg slices and tofu. It bland and had hints of bitterness in it. Quite frankly, not enjoyable. I left this alone after a few sips.

We ordered a Plum Juice (乌梅汤 -$10) and a Corn Juice ($10) as drinks. Plum juice was tangy and refreshing as expected, and corn juice is common in Shanghai but quite a rarity in HK. I do not understand why there aren't more here because this was sweet and delicious.
In conclusion, the place is worth dropping by if you are in the area - this will help fend off the fried dumpling cravings temporarily, but don't expect it to be on par with the real thing.
