On top of the family restaurants in Japan, I have been to many Japanese family restaurants outside the country such as in HK, China, Taiwan, Germany, the U.S., etc… I would say Mama Gohan is not up to the expectation of a normal Japanese family restaurant.First of all, the setting. We were the only customers in the restaurant that night while we were there and were seated in the ground floor, which was packed with big outdoor chairs (those usually used for drinks outdoors like in a poolside bar)
First of all, the setting. We were the only customers in the restaurant that night while we were there and were seated in the ground floor, which was packed with big outdoor chairs (those usually used for drinks outdoors like in a poolside bar) which are bulky and not comfortable. It looks like that it tries to be trendy and fancy but in reality it does not achieve the goal.
We noted some comments about poor services and share similar feelings. The server was not rude to be fair but her tone was blunt. She is just very raw and unsophisticated let me put it this way. For example, she didn’t know much about the menu and didn’t know which food item was not available; the meal of my companion came first and mine came when my companion had almost done with her food; when she brought us the tea, all her fingers were all over the top portion of the cup (where we put our lips) from above, etc… Overall experience interacting with her was not that pleasant.
The food. We ordered a set dinner meal and 2 ala carte dishes plus a bowl of rice. For the set, the meat is extremely dry and not tasty. For the grilled halibut (比目鱼西京烧), which was recommended by the server, it was a disaster. I could only taste the “frozen’ flavor. I did not expect it is fresh of course but at least there should be some sauce especially with what its Chinese name implies. But all I tasted was a piece of deeply frozen fish being broiled without any sauce, and the bowl of rice was lukewarm.
I hope my experience is only an isolated case…….
