I love Chiu Chow food and especially late night da lang (打冷), where the flavors are more stronger.

Boyfriend had come to this place in Mong Kok area near a foot bridge that served Chiu Chow da lang and said it was a little different than the usual dishes. He liked it and he took me back here one night.

心夜来潮 (no English name) is open at night and is has very limited indoor seating. But they do start placing tables out onto the side walk for a dai pai dong feel. Unlike many Chiu Chow da lang places where the staff are mostly older people, this one is run by young people. But don't be deterred. The staff here are on the nose on everything.

Menu is in Chinese only but there are photos of everything served. For outdoor dai pai dong experience, you get seated at nice wooden tables and chairs instead of the typical plastic ones. I was impressed that bowls and utensils were very clean as well. Rare to get this kind of hygiene in a dai pai dong setting.

Dishes are very small so boyfriend and I ordered a number of dishes.

Soybean and Urchin Paste Oysters ($28). This was SUPER SUPER salty and you really do need a Coke or yeah...a beer after eating this. Portion size may be small but you really didn't need that much to make an impact on your tastebuds. The oysters were larger than usual Chiu Chow places. They were fresh tasting with no slimy feel to them.

Raw Crab with Soybean ($108 for middle size). Usually at Chiu Chow places, I like eaing cold crab but I've never had this same crab in it's raw form. The meat was marinated with the salty soybean paste but it wasn't as salty as the previous dish. The crab was sweet and fresh. The crab shell was easy to break, even the crab claw. As a dai pai dong setting, I was bit worried I'd get sick afterwards as I do have a weak stomach when it comes to raw items that are not hygenic. Just to let you know ... I didn't get sick afterwards so yeah...food is really clean here!

Shredded Noodles with Preserved Vegetables ($30 for small size). Originally we ordered the vegetable tea but I guess they mixed up the order. I didn't know and plunked my spoon in was slurping away when boyfriend said that wasn't the vegetable tea. Too late to return, we stuck with it anyways. Boyfriend said it tasted like the vegetable tea anyways except now it's noodles. The noodles were in torn little strands like paper. I liked it. Actually, I think this was my favorite of the night. It was flavorful without being too salty from the large amount of preserved vegeables. There were diced shitake mushrooms which added a woodsy depth to the broth.

Pork Balls in Soup ($32). The balls were bouncy as Chiu Chow people like to make their balls with a really good bounchy texture. It didn't quite taste like pork. The soup tasted like a clear coriander soup.

Marinated Duck ($68). This is always a popular item in most Chiu Chow places. Soysauce marinated duck or goose. However, here they seemed to serve it with the sauce so it was a bit more wet. However, the sauce was pretty good with a nice mix of soysauce and five spices. The pieces were chopped in very small portions so you had to watch out for tiny bone fragrments.

Lollipop Chicken ($26). We looked at the table next to us who ordered this so we did added an order of this. The small pieces of chicken were stuck in toothpicks, rolled in some bits of rice and deep fried. These were pretty good. Crunchy on the outside and moist on the inside. They weren't oily even though they were deep fried.

Skewered Beef Ball ($32 for two sticks). This was interesting as they didn't taste like beef at all. The texture was so bouncy, I'm sure I could have popped these on the table and it would have rebounded back to me.

Topped with a few cans of soft drinks, we totalled at $346. There is no service charge.

Food was pretty good. Some things a bit more salty than usual but then Chiu Chow food is more on the salty side. They had items that I had not seen before. Service was effecient and place even if eating on the street, was surprisingly clean. Get there early as people start to queue at this place the later it gets. Would return again with a larger group of friends to try more dishes.
