If it weren't for a walk to Chi Lin Nunnery, we wouldn't have known where to find the entrance to Café MED. Although part of Hollywood Plaza, the place is located outside the mall which makes it hard to find. No wonder it's not busy there. Location wise Café MED is already at a disadvantage. Café MED wasn't what we had expected. We had in mind a diverse menu, but was greeted with as many options as a Fast Food restaurant. Café MED wasn't what we had expected. We had in mind a diverse menu, but was greeted with as many options as a Fast Food restaurant. Personally, I would have preferred more pictures; just so I can have an idea of what to order. Then again, maybe there wasn't much on the menu because it was almost past lunch time when we arrived. Other than that, the café isn't what it seems like. The place has a similar interior design as Pizza Hut: black and shiny surfaces with food names written in white. The only thing is that the restaurant is on a totally different level. It tries to look classy, but the noise makes it cheap. Perhaps some music in the background would help. When it comes to the food, it's a mix of good and bad.
We had two lunch sets: Roast Duck Angel Hair, and French Style Beef on Red Rice. All lunch sets include coffee, tea or soup. We chose the Soup of the Day and a Lemon Iced Tea. For $6 more, we had the Soup of the Day and Garlic Bread option. That was quite a let down.
When the starters arrived, we were shocked. There was only one thin slice of bread. To make matters worse, it had to be in a basket which makes the thing look even tinier. Since the bread was too crispy, it should have been called "Garlic Toast", even though it wasn't even garlicky. The Creamy Corn Soup wasn't any better. Imagine putting thick paste with the occasional kernels in your mouth. It must have sat in the kitchen for a while for it wasn't even steamy hot. A suggestion: more bread and less soup. Luckily, the main course was better. The roast duck was a little too salty, though. The beef was okay, nothing special, but the rice was delicious. Cooked with tomato juice, the rice absorbed both the colour and the flavour of the fruit. (I'm assuming there wasn't any food colouring.)
Now about the service, it seriously needs improvement. Throughout the whole time, we had the feeling of being chased out. Waiters would take our plates away as soon as we put down our forks. Can't say the same thing about the speed of bringing food over. Also, we asked for the bill once, but weren't sure the waitress heard us because she didn't react so we asked for it again. As a response she said something like: "Yes, I know, I know", with a slight irritation in her voice. We didn't see any smiles either. The restaurant also has a 10% service charge. I don't think the service we got was worth $9.
I must admit, we were a bit disappointed because we intentionally went to Café MED to have lunch. It's a good thing we live close by, otherwise it would have been even sadder.
