To start with a positive. I enjoyed the food and the air conditioning was set at a comfortable temperature. I ordered a vegetarian breakfast and opted to switch the orange juice for a latte. The latte arrived after 10 minutes, it looked pretty and tasted ok. The food, well, the food took half an hour to arrive, I reckon it could have arrived sooner and they'd have less trouble with wait-times and queues if they could trim even just ten minutes off that. I suspect that they didn't have any bread

I suspect that they didn't have any bread for the toast though as one member of staff ran out and then returned back a few minutes later with several packs of Garden bread. The presentation of the meal was really pleasing, and the proportions seemed good, (except for the amount of jam). The taste, overall I'd say it was good, enjoyable even but some of the component parts were a little lacking, (the salad leaves felt very wet, so much so that the dressing fought with the water to give them flavour), the egg could have done with a little more salt or pepper, it was pretty bland but not unpleasant, the toast was a little too dry and would have been better with butter and the sweetcorn would have benefitted from being drained prior to being potted. The highlights though were the PERFECT hash browns, (oh how I have craved these), the nicely cooked mushrooms and the tasty baked beans (beans, hash and mushroom, what better way to start the day?!). It would be really cool it they offered an a la carte or build-your-own breakfast menu, (only because I want double hash browns and beans).

Now, the rest...I wanted to check out this cafe after seeing it in the top listings on Open Rice and noticing that it had a vegetarian breakfast which looked incredibly appetising. Since I wanted to have a substantial breakfast before heading off for a spot of wandering and potential sea-swimming I arrived early, actually too early, at 11.26 it wasn't open so I did a lap around the block and was inside and seated by 11.40. I ordered almost immediately as I knew what I wanted and it was from this point on was where the atmospheric annoyances began. Firstly there was Christian soft-rock playing ("....Jesus shine a light and let the whole world see..."), I'm totally fine with people having their faith but in an ostensibly non-religious cafe I found it a little strange and unnerving as if I had been tricked through the doors, also the local radio was playing simultaneously with Chinese pop music vying for my attention. Thankfully at some point the staff settled on having only one source of music and the radio won out. The other restaurant-related noise-pollution was the incredibly loud blender or coffee grinder which was in use at frequent intervals, I understand that kitchens can be noisy places but this was just too much. As well as the restaurant sounds I had a couple of open-mouthed noisy eaters immediately to my left, normally I can tolerate such things but they ate SO loudly and made such a hideous array of sounds and seemed to only talk whilst their mouths were full. Then there was the serial-sniffer to my right, with a perpetual, wet-noistrilled habitual sniff and to cap it all off, as my food arrived so did a yowling infant. Now I know that I can't judge the restaurant on the behaviour of its customers but the atmosphere did greatly impact upon my enjoyment, I had to resort to putting my headphones in and turning up the volume. Before my food arrived a queue was starting to form outside and to save on space a woman was seated opposite me on my table, the poor woman looked so desperately unhappy, I did try to smile but she didn't really seem up for exchanging smiles.

The only other thing of note was the soft-furnishings. The seating was all soft fabric which in that style of cafe just seems like an unnecessary hygiene risk, it's much harder to clean spills from this style of material than wipe-clean plastic.

To conclude, the food was good and it is great to have another vegetarian breakfast option but in the future I will stick to late weekday brunches.
