Decor/Environment & Hygiene:
The restaurant is along the tram line, so it wasn't hard to find at all. The decor style, dark colours and dim lighting was a typical Indian restaurant to me. It was a quiet and comfy place. I apologize for not being able to show you pictures of the environment because of the uploading limit, I rather show you pictures of the food that was ordered. As for hygiene, eveything seemed okay.
Taste & Value:
Below is the Masala Papadam ($21), which was given to us for free. It's a typical Indian starter, but doesn't it look like a tortilla with some salsa on top? Haha I liked that you could taste the lentils and the different spices; this dish was pretty strong in terms of flavours. I thought it was a bit salty, but this was cousin J's favourite of everything that we ate that night. It came the the the 2 typical condiments on the side: a spicy green sauce and a more mellow red sauce. Both sauces were nice. After the appetizer, we decided that something to drink would be nice so we ordered 3 Mango Lassi ($36). Seeing that there were 5 of us, they gave us 2 more for free. How nice of them! It was a really refreshing drink, and was a perfect match to the strong spices in Indian cuisine. Since there were 5 of us, we decided to order 5 dishes and they were all wonderful! Here is what we ordered:
Tandoori Chicken($88): There were 5 pieces of deliciously cooked chicken on this hot plate. The chicken was flavourful, tender and juicy! You know this can be a risky dish to order sometimes, since the meat can be so dry, but luckily this wasn't the case at all. Tandoor Fish ($132)- The fish used in the dish is a Threadfin fish; one that I've always liked. It was perfectly cooked, and the spices used were just enough and didn't cover the taste of the fish itself. This was my grandma's favourite of the night, and maybe mine too. Butter Chicken ($79)- Ordering butter chicken whenever we eat Indian food has become a habit. I find people are often afraid of this dish becasue of the name. Butter is used, but it's also the spices used that makes this such a nice curry dish. The sauce was creamy and flavourful; perfect for dipping the naan. This was young cousin J's favourite. Sagg Paneer ($79)- This dish is a spinach-based dish with cheese. Another strong dish with a creamy sauce for dipping the naan. All of us liked it a lot and this was my sister's favourite. Chicken Tikka ($78)- Yes, another chicken dish. This dish came with 6 perfectly cooked chicken pieces that were even more tender and juicy than the tandoori chicken! I'd probably recommend this over the tandoori chicken. I'm still debating if this or the fish is my favourite. All 5 entrees were perfectly cooked and seasoned. I'd recommend all of them. To help us enjoy the entrees, we had some sides to help us wipe up the wonderful sauces.
We ordered 1 Garlic nann ($21), 1 Paratha ($28, no pitcure unfortunately) and were given 1 Green Onion Naan ($25) for free. All 3 were okay, but I prefer thicker naan and these were all quite thin. As for the paratha, I think more ghee could have been used in the dough and it could have been more discernible. Then, we also ordered one Pullau Rice ($32) to share. I like Indian rice because it's not sticky; I like dry rice. The rice was good, but didn't have much taste. I guess that made it perfect to eat with the entrees. Overall, the entrees were more outstanding than the sides. Since it's not often that one can have Inidan dessert, we decided to try their dessert anyway although we were extremely full. Oh well, that is what happens when a bunch of females gather and eat. I remember my sweets-loving roommate telling me about how wonderful Gulab Jamun($32) is, so we ordered that. When we ordered it, the owner(I believe) said most people find it too sweet and gave us 3 balls cut in half to try for free and see what we thought about it. Yeah, free stuff again! I found out that this dessert is made with milk solids and then soaked in a cardamom flavoured syrup. I really wouldn't have known because to me it tasted like a cake soaked in rose water. I would compare this to a baklava in terms of taste and sweetness. The owner was right as it was pretty sweet, but I liked it. Since it was so sweet, half a ball really was enough for one person. To finish off, this platter box was served. The white balls are made with milk and sugar. They didn't have much taste and were quite sweet. Beside these "milk balls", there were some anise seeds and cardamom I think? ( I can't remember) for your to refresh your palate. Service:
The service was excellent. I'm not saying this because we got a lot of freebies, I'm saying this because I could feel that the service was provided from the heart. The owner actually spent time talking to you to see how you liked the food. You could sense that he cared about the quality of the food and what his customers thought for possible improvements.
Final Verdict:
This is a place worth trying. Go check it out.
