I almost feel compelled to write this as I've tried Marugame Seimen elsewhere (notably, Isquare) and it's actually pretty good value-for-money. Unfortunately, the Tai koo branch staff are clearly not up to par.I visited on a Friday afternoon around 2:30pm (work in the area and this is the best time to beat the lunch crowd) and Marugame has after 2:30pm some off-peak hour offers according to colleagues. These include free soft drink if you buy regular price udon or there are two types of udon on
I visited on a Friday afternoon around 2:30pm (work in the area and this is the best time to beat the lunch crowd) and Marugame has after 2:30pm some off-peak hour offers according to colleagues. These include free soft drink if you buy regular price udon or there are two types of udon on offer for $25, with a choice of either soft boiled egg in soy sauce udon or deep fried beancurd (inari) in soup udon.
I went with the soft boiled egg with soy sauce udon ($25) plus bottled oolong tea ($10).
Udon - overcooked to the point where it was soggy
Soft boiled egg - this was done just right, so good for them
Sauce - the main issue was the udon was drenched in hot soy sauce, which made it extremely salty. Essentially the staff took a large ladle of soy sauce and emptied the whole ladle over the noodles. I believe in the ISquare branch they just take a spoonful, which makes the saltiness much more acceptable
The "straw that broke the camel's back" was the arrogant and inexplicably rude attitude of the waitstaff, which is even worse than some famous cha chaan teng's and definitely unheard of in Japanese food joints (even McD's service is better). When I asked about the prices, they shouted back at me as though I had insulted them. The bottled oolong tea was deposited on my tray with a loud thump as though the bottle had offended the cashier.
With such attitude in uber competitive HK, good luck to the business owner.
