If you're coming here, you're probably a tourist, or someone like me who lives here but is committed to during all the touristy things. I was finally motivated to come here after "Hong Kong Island Magazine" (don't ask) compared it to Haw Par Village, which I had the pleasure of seeing when I was in Singapore recently. Unfortunately, it's got none of the earnest charm of Haw Par, but it is tacky as all get-out, so there you go.

Do make sure to figure out exactly where you're going and how you're getting there before embarking on the journey. We got off the bus at the wrong pier (our friend was at the other Jumbo Kingdom ferry-- there are two!) and we were followed for three blocks by a desperate boat-guy whose English vocabulary consisted of the word "jumbo."

We ate on what I take is the "cheap" floor, although it's not particularly cheap, and you have to watch what you order. We got:

Fried squid: a little on the chewy side, but better than average. B

Sweet and sour pork:A classic, and straightforward. The pork was pretty tender and tasty, the sauce wasn't overwhelming. I've had better but there was nothing to complain about here. B+

Pan-fried grouper: The grouper looked (in the picture) like it came with one type of green, but it really came with the same Chinese broccoli we ordered in the sauteed vegetables. It was meaty and tasty, but quite greasier than I'm used to with fish, and I didn't feel I could eat too much of it. C+

Deep fried shrimp and pork wontons: This was one of the specials, and it sounded exciting. It wound up not being all that good: a relatively flavorless, extremely greasy shrimp-meatball in a cardboard-tasting eggy-looking wonton wrapper. I didn't eat my share. D

Sauteed vegetables: Western broccoli meets Chinese broccoli, in everyone's favorite corn-starch and chicken-broth sauce. Astoundingly average. B-

This place is a total tourist trap, and you'll want to keep an eye on your wallet. We ordered tap water, and instead of telling us they didn't have tap water, they brought bottled water to our table. Now, I guess it makes sense that a floating restaurant doesn't have tap water, but it's pretty inexcusable to give people things they didn't order. Most of the menu is a haze of expensive sets that you can easily forgo for more appetizing, less shark-fin-heavy, fare a la carte.

Don't forget to explore after eating. They have a "fish exhibit" (I forget the name) which is mostly empty tanks... but still!
