The Envoy has a stylishly furnished interior and serves aesthetically pleasing plates whose architects have clearly given them much thought. My only complaint would be the relatively limited menu selection and the difficulty of avoiding deep-fry dishes unless one sticks with standard mains such as steaks and lamb racks, which might defeat the entire purpose of coming over as steaks are served in at least a hundred restaurants nearby. Seared Scallops at the Governor's Kitchen, $128
Still slightly raw in the middle, this was a tasty appetizer for us. But as much as I appreciate the take on molecular gastronomy and its aesthetic effect, I would prefer not to have the sweet bubbles with my scallop. Sir Pottinger's Squid Salad, $118
For some reason the kitchen failed to understand 'dressing on the side' as is commonly understood elsewhere. First time the salad came, the "dressing" was literally on the side, but the salad was very spicy. We requested the kitchen to fix this, and the second time round the salad was so salty I had trouble eating it. It still had dressing in some form or another on it (as it was shiny with sour notes) although the spiciness has gone. While the request for 'dressing on the side' has never been misunderstood in the hundreds or so instances that I've requested it at other restaurants in Hong Kong and abroad, it had us rethink the literal meaning of 'dressing on the side'. I suppose we should revise our request to 'seasoning and dressing on the side' in the future. This aside, the salad was meagre and the squid was pretty unmemorable. Truffle Fries, $88
Great, although we wouldn't know we ordered truffle fries if we didn't see the menu. As plain fries, this was pretty much an A, deep-fried and seasoned to perfection. USDA Black Angus Striploin, 8oz, $288
This was a very nicely cooked piece of striploin with a fair price tag.
