Summary: For its location, better sushi than you'd think for about the prices you'd expect. Lunch is a zoo, but dinner is quiet, and they do deals on some apps. A borderline but "good" recommendation for a solid neighborhood Japanese restaurant (in Central of all places)Sushi Masa, a chain with a few shops in HK, is a cut above local Japanese restaurants here. Sushi Masa, a chain with a few shops in HK, is a cut above local Japanese restaurants here. With Japanese sushi chefs (the chef in Sheung wan is terrific) or serving staff, you can tell they’ve tried to elevate casual Japanese. Not to say that this place is particularly cheap. Here are the sushi portions of the menu:
They also have several other pages of cooked food and an interesting all you can eat sushi deal for about 400, but AYCE sushi rarely ends well does it? Can we also have a shout-out for 48$ highballs? Christ, they’re so hard to find in HK
The sushi is above-average; well-seasoned rice, nicely constructed sushi lightly pressed, and vivid and tasty neta toppings. Here’s my tray of nigiri from left to right:
Shime Saba – Usually one of my favorites, I felt it was just a bit over-marinated
Aji (horse mackerel) – as good as expected, exuding that refreshing, shining fish sea taste
Shima-Aji – Really excellent. I’m always a bit on the fence with the slightly heavy shima-aji, but this had a good balance of umami as well
Boiled Shrimp – particularly sweet and firm
Octopus = better than almost all casual restaurant octopus – chewy but not rubbery, and packed with ocean flavour
Squid – The chewy not crunchy type (I still don’t know what the difference is…), it’s FILLED with umami with every bite, and that flavor lingers after you chew. Don’t know how they do it
Was actually a bit full, but I wanted to see how they handle rolls and such. From left to right:
Negitoro with Pickles (toro-taku) – really liked this, a blend between the rich toro and the salty/sour pickles
Ikura – Classic. Kind of bite-sized
Negitoro hand roll – delicious as you’d expect, nothing unusual
Overall, Sushi Masa isn’t built for parties, celebrations, or date night. It’s built for above-average food in a convenient location and is priced accordingly. I paid 350+ after 20% off all the food and 2 highballs. For the all the food (a la carte sushi) and some semblance of peace and quiet in Central (was pretty empty by 9), I thought it was reasonable. I ordered quite a bit, and cooked food is far cheaper, so don’t assume you'll need to spend this much if you go. Its curse is that it's a respectable neighbourhood Japanese restaurant in a neighbourhood where no one lives, and it's probably not worth specially seeking out . If you're in the area and want some good, no-hassle sushi though, this is your place.
