A little while ago, boyfriend and I went to 潮福蒸气石锅 in Shau Kei Wan and found it to be an interesting experience. As his mother was in town, we decided to have a dinner here for the night before Chinese New Year. It was seafood, something appropriate for celebrating Chinese New Year and it was steamed, something that would appeal to health conscience members of the older generation.

As they lived on the Kowloon side, we found they had a branch in San Po Kong. This was very close and convenient to where they live. The entire restaurant was busy as I assume most came for Chinese New Year dinner gatherings.

The restaurant is like your typical Chinese restaurant except for one special thing. Each table had a bamboo hat in the center. This is where the action comes into play. The "hat" is actually what you use to cover a specially designed steamer that will steam all sorts of food at a carefully calculated timer that is installed in each table.

At one area of the restaurant is an assortment of daily fresh seafood available.

We noticed that the restaurant now has special set menus (all menus are in Chinese) that include a variety of seafood, congee, chicken and vegetables for set price per person. Finding this to be quite reasonable, we tried the set that was $298 per person and added three razor back clams at $48 per piece.

The dinner began with the creation of the congee. We chose a pumpkin and spare rib congee. Rice, pumpkin and spare ribs were placed at the bottom of the steamer. Then a metal steamer was placed on top. As the seafood and chicken is placed on top to be steamed, the drippings would fall down below and flavor the congee. So, at the end of the meal, the congee is finished and ready to eat.

Razor back clams were $48 per piece. As we had three of us, we ordered three. The clams were sweet and generously doused with garlic and vermicelli.

After the razor back clams, we started in on the set that we ordered. Cooking was quick so we had to eat fast. We began with some rather large prawn. The set includes two prawn per person. Cooked at the right moment, this meat was firm, a mark that these were fresh prawn.

The set included two mini geoduck per person. At first we thought these were clams but we were informed they were mini geoduck. These were excellent. Super sweet that lingered in my mouth long after I had finished eating it.

Set included one oyster per person. This was oddly flavorless oyster. I wonder if it was due to the type?

Next up was a small abalone. This was pretty fresh and tasty.

The set included three giant clams per person. These were excellent. There was also no sand in them so they were obviously cleaned properly. One of my clams didn't open after cooking and the staff immediately threw it out and replaced it with another one, without any questions or arguments. The staff didin't even ask me. They just saw it and tossed it. Very good in my book for service.

The scallop that was part of the set was good as well. A decent size scallop and cooked perfectly so it wasn't rubbery.

After all the seafood, the staff then started to steam the chicken. This was a chicken with cordyceps.

The chicken was tender and moist though the cordyceps really didn't add much to the dish other than the fact that it's generally an expensive mushroom that a lot of Chinese people cherish.

The set included three different types of vegetables (gai lan, baby bak choy and wombak)  that were also steamed. This was placed in the steamer after we finished the chicken so I can only assume the vegetables were steamed in the chicken fat.

After we were done, the metal steamer was lifted and the congee was completed. The congee was flavored from the seafood and chicken fat drippings so it was a very rich tasting congee. However, it was a bit more watery than the one in Shau Kei Wan. I'm not a big fan of watery congee but boyfriend and his mother liked it that way.

Watermelon was presented as dessert to finish off our meal. Payment is done outside at the cashier.

A good dinner to await the new year. I liked the new addition of the sets as they seemed like a better value and good for people like me who can't decide what to order. There was a whole lot more steam than the Shau Kei Wan branch, making it feel like a sauna and half the time we couldn't see what was going on. I think it was only at our end of the restaurant as I bumped into a coworker and her family on our way out. She said they didn't have any over steaming problems. Otherwise, nice dinner for a gathering.
